Chapter 3: Last Day of School

3389 Words
Emmeline’s POV               As we pull up to Canyon High School I am shocked at how many unmated females are throwing themselves at the young males within our pack. I groan at their shamelessness and pull myself out of the car. Matthew walks beside me with a smirk on his face. I glance around wondering who it is that has caught my brother’s attention, but no one stands out.               My brother joins his friends at the entrance of the school, as I choose to make my way inside with hopes of seeking out my best friend. As I walk by, I see Clark Blackwood standing there holding his girlfriend, Hayden. They are not mates yet, but I wouldn’t be surprised. She is stunning and loves to be the center of attention. The only downside is hat she is friends with Kenzie Tinkman, who hates me. I notice Clark looking towards me and quickly move inside, hoping that he didn’t notice me gawking at him.               Lily is nowhere in sight, so I send her text letting her know I’m in the library until our first class. I find my favorite spot and start to immerse myself into the history of our area. About ten minutes into my reading I feel someone kick my foot trying to get my attention. Looking up I expect to see Lily, but instead I find myself sitting under a smirking Kenzie.               “Aww, you are so cute. Why do you look so scared?” She asks feigning innocence. I try to stand up, but she pushes me back down. “Who said you could get up runt!”               “Kenzie, please I don’t want to do this today.” I plead with her, but she just smiles.               “Do what?”               “You know, fight.” I state looking down.               “Well its not really fair to call anything we do a fight, because your not an actual opponent. Your more like a toy, but don’t worry I will help you.” She flips her hair back and grabs me by the arms pulling me into a standing position. It doesn’t take her much effort to pull or push me since I’m smaller than most in my pack. I stand at about 5’4” while others my age are about 5’7” or taller. Hence me getting the nickname “runt” from some of my peers.               “What do you mean?” I try to pull my arms out of her grasp but it’s useless. Her nails dig into my skin, and I know for sure her grip will leave bruises. “Please, Kenzie. I have never done anything…,” but my pleas are cut short by a slap to the face.               “Shut up!” She states pulling me into an empty room cornering me. “You are weak and pathetic that’s enough of an excuse to dislike you.” She states glaring at me as I move away from her. “You make our pack vulnerable.”  She takes a seat at a table in the room and points at a chair. “Sit.” I quickly do as she says hoping this will all turn out okay.               “I said I’m going to help you.” She says with a wicked smile on her face. “It would be unkind to let my future sister-in-law suffer due to being a weakling.”               I feel like all the air has been sucked out of my lungs. I feel sick and my eyes fill with tears. Of all the people, my brother chooses this witch. I stand about to run out of the room, but Kenzie pushes me back down into my chair. “Listen here, runt, from now on you will do as I say or I will let you be a chew toy to those training to become warriors. Your brother loves me and I know how to keep him happy, so don’t even try to plead your case to him. He’s mine!” She spits at me. “I will see you tonight for dinner. Make yourself presentable before showing your face. I don’t want to be associated with something that looks like this.” She flips her long dirty blonde hair over her shoulder and walks out of the room.               I start to sob as I think about my brother being with someone who hates me so much. Wrapping my arms around me I try to calm myself down. After about five minutes I feel composed enough to make my way to my class. I stand up and collect my things before making my way out the door. However, only a few feet out the door I stumble into what feels like a brick wall. I look up to see bright blue eyes staring down at me with a look of concern. Oh goddess, it’s Clark Blackwood.               “I’m so sorry.” I say bowing my head slightly showing my submission. Honestly, this day couldn’t get any worse.               “Are you okay?” He asks staring at me like I’m about to freak out.               “Yes, again I’m sorry! I’ll be going now.” I quickly dash away making it out of the library.               I can’t take this day anymore so instead of going to class I head right out of the school. I would rather walk home then stay here any longer. I text Lily letting her know that I need a break and that I’m heading home.               “Lils., I’m heading home! I’m not feeling it today. I’ll meet up with you later or something. Luv ya!” I send her the text and stuff my phone in my bag. It takes me about 20 minutes to walk home, and luckily no one notices me enter. Making me sigh in relief about not having to answer too many questions. I throw myself on my bed feeling exhausted. My phone starts to chime over and over again indicating texts coming through.               “Ok! I will see you tonight! We are going out!” Lily texts me adding a small kissy face emoji. My other texts however are from my agitated brother.               “Emmy, where are you?”               “Why aren’t you answering me?”               “Lily says you went home! Who took you?”               “Emmy!”               “You better not have walked!”               “Emmy, I swear to goddess what is going on?”               “You better explain yourself once I get home!” His last text made me roll my eyes. I pulled myself up off my bed and locked my door so that he couldn’t just come interrogate me after school. I love my brother and I want him to be happy, but now that he is with Kenzie I feel alone and frankly betrayed by the Moon Goddess. I quickly send my mom a text explaining that I will be absent from dinner tonight.               “Hey mom! I left school early not feeling too well. I think it’s just exhaustion, so I’m going to try and relax tonight. Won’t be at dinner, but no need to worry. See you tomorrow. Love You!” I tossed my phone on my nightstand and wrap myself in my comforter. After the events of this morning, I feel exhausted. I lay down and hug my pillow. Tears roll down my cheeks as I slowly drift asleep. Clark’s POV               The atmosphere is filled with excitement at Canyon High school. Everyone was excited about the last day of school. As the future Alpha I was expected to take my studies seriously. I envied my friends who treated school like it was just something to pass the time. Since I was 15 years-old my parents have been preparing me for Alpha training. Literally all work and no play. Today however I was excited to let loose with my friends, as today was my last day of high school. This weekend is my birthday so I will be gaining my wolf and then immediately thrusting myself into Alpha training. So, today will be nothing but fun and my friends and I have plans on having a bonfire at my family’s lakeside cabin.               Currently I am standing outside with some of my friends waiting for the school day to start. Parker stands next to me gawking at some of the females that are staring in our direction. Parker is one of my best friends and will be taking on the role as gamma when I take over leading the pack.               “Man, I hope the moon goddess blesses me with my dream girl.” He states staring at a group of girls walking into the school.               “Oh yeah? What is your dream girl?” I ask raising an eyebrow at him.               “I like red heads!” He wiggles his eyebrows. “True red heads!” I smack him on the side of the head.               “Dude it’s too early for your dirty thoughts this morning.”               “No really, I am attracted to them. However, what I’m really looking for is someone who can handle my jokes and wants to spend quality time with me. You know like actually do stuff outside of the bedroom.” I feel stunned at his honesty.               “Parker are you growing up?” I ask feigning shock.               “Oh shut it. s*x is great, but it’s not everything. After awhile it starts to become….well boring.”               “I don’t think I will ever get enough of it. It’s the best stress reliever.” I state giving a shrug. I notice Parker is looking past me towards the parking lot. I turn to follow his gaze only to see Hayden and Kenzie pulling into the parking lot.               “Do you think the moon goddess has her planned as your destined mate?               “I honestly don’t know.” I state letting out a sigh. Hayden is very attractive, but she is also a lot of work. She has long silvery blonde hair and dark blue eyes. She is tall and slender in build. While she can be naturally attractive, her habits make her at times very unpleasant. She cakes her face in make-up and wears very little clothing. She also has a bad habit of being petty and shows little respect towards others who she declares as being beneath her.               “Hey baby!” She says wrapping her arms around my neck and kissing me forcefully. Her mouth tastes like peaches and cream. Kenzie walks up next to her friend.               “Awe, you two will be so cute leading in the future.” Kenzie says smiling brightly at her best friend. Parker huffs next to me looking away from both girls.               “Do you have a problem?” Kenzie asks raising an eyebrow.               “Nope, just know that nothing is certain yet.”               “How dare you!” Hayden shrieks smacking him in the arm. “I know I can help him lead, and you will regret that statement when I take place beside him while you just sit there as a gamma.”               “Enough Hayden!” I state pulling her arms off of me. “Leaders don’t talk like that.”               “But it’s not okay for him to disrespect me either!”               All I can do is glare at her telling her to knock it off. Hayden and Kenzie pout while Parker just snickers. I watch Hayden step away from me letting me know that my punishment for not taking her side is no touching, but at this point I don’t really care. I could have another female if I really wanted, but having a relationship isn’t my main focus right now.               “Hey, Matt is finally here.” Parker says drawing my attention to my future Beta walking up to the group. Kenzie jumps up and down in excitement.               “Hey baby!” She says batting her eyelashes. Matt smiles and stands beside her.               “Wait, you two are a thing?” Parker asks astonished by Matt’s choice.               “Yep, he asked me out yesterday.” Kenzie squeals while hugging her best friend.               “Yeah, I’m willing to give it a try. I’m 18 years old, and she turns 18 in a few months. Maybe we are mates.” Matt shrugs and scratches the back of his neck.               I turn to see Parker gaping at the couple with his eyebrows down letting his true disdain for Kenzie seep out. I nudge him to remind him that he is public. He straightens up and runs his hand through his blonde hair.               “Well congrats I guess.” He mutters looking away from the group.               “Aw, thanks guys!” Kenzie sings wrapping her arms around Matt’s bicep.               Everyone continues to congratulate them and wish them luck when it comes to being mates in the future. While Kenzie is smiling and soaking up the attention, Matt is looking behind him towards the school entrance. I follow his gaze to see the silhouette of a small female with deep rich brown waves falling just past her shoulders entering the school. I swear she was looking this way before entering. I don’t recall her as someone who is a part of our close group.               “What is it baby?” Kenzie asks noticing how distracted Matt is.               “Just worried about my sister, I hope she will be okay with this.” He replies honestly giving Kenzie a look of concern.               “Well she would be stupid if she doesn’t.” Hayden says shrugging her shoulders.               “Wait, you have a sister?” Parker asks looking around for a mini-Matt look alike.               “Dude, I have told the both of you this for years. I don’t understand why you both can’t ever remember her.” Matt glares at Parker and I, making me hold up my hands in defense.               “I have a lot on my plate, sorry man.”               “Maybe she isn’t memorable.” Hayden shrugs.               “Shut up, Hayden. I’m happy she doesn’t draw attention like others. I don’t have to worry about protecting her from males or others who are jealous of her.” Matt states glaring at Hayden making her take a step back. I roll my eyes at her ability to piss everyone off.               “Baby, she will be fine. It’s time for her to grow up and move out from your protection. It will be good for her.” Kenzie tries to soothe him and places a kiss on his cheek. Matt gives her a small smile and nods.               The group moves on discussing the party tonight. I feel myself start to relax and I watch my friends getting along. I need this before training this summer. Kenzie excuses herself from the group just before the first bell rings. The rest of us head off to our classes for the day. The last day is really a joke. Most classes just watch movies to finish up the year. I enter the classroom to see our frazzled young female teacher struggling with a box of books.               “Miss. Glen do you need some help?” I ask noticing that both humans and pack members are sitting in the room ignoring her struggle. Many are sitting and chatting about their summer plans as a film plays in the background.               “Oh goodness, Clark, that would be amazing. Could you take this box to the library please?” I nod and pick up the box effortlessly.               Making my way to the library I notice that it is basically empty. The old librarian watches me walk in and just points to a table on the far side of the room where other boxes are stacked up. I walk over to the table and set the box down. As I turn to leave, I find myself face to face with Kenzie.               “What are you doing here?” She asks looking a bit panicked.               “Dropping these off.” I gesture to the box next to me. “Why?”               “Nothing, just not a place where most people hang out on their last day. Others are probably waiting for us. Let’s go.” She says turning quickly and walking towards the exit. She turns to look at me when she notices I did not follow her. Suspicion starts to bubble up within me, but I don’t notice anything out of the ordinary.               “Go ahead. I’m heading to check in with the principal for my father before I head back to class.” She glances around the room but nods. I watch as she quickly leaves and disappears into the hallway.               I start to make my way to the exit taking my time. Passing by some of the private rooms along the back side of the library I hear soft whimpering. I walk up to the door a bit concerned, but before I can ask anything the door flies open revealing a young female who has her head cast downward. She runs into me and stumbles back.               She looks up and I notice that it’s the same female I saw entering the school earlier. She pushes her brown hair away from her face and looks up at me. I feel myself get sucked into her hazel eyes. I have never seen eyes that looked like hers. They were basically gray with green flecks. My breath hitches as I stare at her.               “I’m so sorry!” She quivers bowing her head. It was then I notice that she has been crying and her left cheek is red.               “Are you okay?” I ask trying to get a better look at her. She takes a step away from me.                “Yes, again I’m sorry! I’ll be going now.” Before I can say anything more, she takes off out of the library in almost a full-on sprint. Is she afraid of me? I pull myself together, but once I make it out to the hallway the tiny female is gone.               I shrug and make my way back to the classroom and sit next to Matt. “So, you and Kenzie?”               “Yeah, she isn’t that bad. She is actually pretty cool when no one else is around.” Matt says giving a small smirk.               “Do you really think you both are going to be mates?”               “I don’t know. I am really interested in her, so I guess time will tell.” He shrugs with a small smirk.               I nod and turn my attention back to class. The day drags on slowly. Every class is the same with a film playing in the background. Matt is in each of my classes, and while we engage in some more small talk I get the feeling he is distracted. He continues to text vigorously in each class, and appears to get more and more annoyed. Parker also takes notice.               “Trouble in paradise,” he chuckles tilting his head towards Matt. I also chuckle but shrug, not sure what has Matt so worked up.               “Ready for tonight?” He asks wiggling his eyebrows in a mischievous way.               “Yeah, I need a release.” I state stretching out in my seat.               “Oh, I’m sure Hayden can help you with that.” He sneers leaning back shaking his head.               “What’s your problem with her?”               “She is not fit for you. She is most definitely not someone who will make a great Luna either. She is selfish, needy, and spoiled. If she is your mate, I will respect her. However, I highly doubt the moon goddess would do that to our pack.” He states looking towards the front of our class avoiding my gaze.               I sigh knowing that he is right. Hayden needs an attitude change if she does turn out to be my mate. I try to picture her as our pack’s future Luna but can’t. Instead, my mind continues to drift back to the tiny female in the library with her tear-stained cheeks. I want to know more about her and why I intimidate her. All I can do is be patient and hope that I will see her again at the bon-fire tonight.
