Kathy took her NCLEX as soon as she returned. She passed the exam and was officially licensed as a BSN. She started at UCLA Medical right away. She loved how welcomed she was and fit right in.
The holidays were coming, and they had been in LA for almost five months. Kathy invited her mom and his parents to come out for Matt and Matthew's birthday. I didn't take any thought for Josephine to say yes and make flight arrangements. His parents were going to make plans. Charlene heard about it and made reservations. She and Jeff were going to make a mini vacay out of the trip.
While everyone was there, the wedding plans were discussed and being finalized. They were having a spring wedding. The date was set for early May. Matt's groomsmen were the guys. Kathy's bridesmaids were three of the girls she worked with, Sari, Tami, and Leila. Scott was asked to be the best man. The maid of honor was Charlene, and Matthew was the ring bearer.
Spring had sprung in the Midwest. The wedding was only a few weeks away.
Arrangements were being handled by Josephine and Carol. They were so excited. While they were there, the moms and Kathy went dress shopping for her gown. The bridesmaids met them at the first shop. It was a successful trip. Kathy found her gown. The bridesmaids loved the dresses she chose. Carol was unsure about the color black for them, but the choice was Kathy's. Carol and Josephine found their dresses as well.
Less than two weeks before the wedding, Kathy woke up and ran to the bathroom. Matt heard her throwing up and went to check on her.
“What's wrong, are you sick?”
"Probably do. I work in a hospital where germs are everywhere. It is still flu season.”
“Whatever it is, we need to make you better for the wedding,” he smiled as he pulled her hair back while she threw up again.
“Maybe you and Matthew should go back earlier than me so you don't get whatever this is.”
“Are you sure? I don't want to leave you alone while you're sick.”
“Go sweetie, I'll be fine. I work at a hospital, so I have plenty of care at my fingertips.”
“Alright.”
Matt flew back home early to prepare everything he needed for the wedding with the groomsmen. He brought Matthew with him. He had to get Matthew's and his tuxedos. They were staying at his parent's house.
Kathy was lost without her boys around. She was feeling better, and she couldn't wait to get there. She packed up her gown and the bridesmaids' dresses and shipped them home.
Their flight was early in the morning. The car service picked up the girls before picking her up on the way to the airport. She was queasy on the flight. She had never had motion sickness before. She assumed it was leftover from the stomach bug she had.
Josephine picked the girls up from the airport. Matt and Matthew picked up Kathy. He couldn't wait to see his bride. On the way home, Kathy asked him to stop at the pharmacy so she could get some anti-nausea medicine. They pulled into the parking lot.
“Stay with him in the car. I'm only grabbing something for my stomach.”
“Are you still sick?”
“It's probably just the tail end of whatever I had.”
He laughed and said, “Ok because the last time we did this, you were pregnant.”
She hesitated for a minute then replied, “Yeah, déjà vu, huh?”
She chuckled and ran inside the store. She headed straight for the stomach aid aisle. She grabbed a box, and the label said 'safe for morning sickness' and she froze. She pulled out her phone. “No, not again.” She scrolled through her calendar. “Oh for f**k's sake.” She put her phone away and went to the feminine aisle. Without hesitation, she grabbed the same brand pregnancy test from Matthew. She got to the checkout and remembered Charlene's advice, so she grabbed his favorite candy. She paid and headed out to the car.
“Here,” she said and handed him the candy.
He smiled and took it. “Wait...what?”
“Relax.”
He looked at her side-eyed. “You're so funny.”
They headed to Kathy's mom's house. The girls were set up in the guest rooms. Their dresses were hanging on the closet doors. Kathy's was in her mom's room, so Matt didn't see it.
Josephine took Matthew from Matt when he came through the door. “There's grandma's sweet angel.”
