PLANS

A few days later, Kathy woke up not feeling well. She thought maybe she caught a stomach bug. She didn’t give it much thought, she just figured it was that or her period finally coming. Matt picked her up, and they headed to school. Kathy couldn’t get it out of her mind, so she looked at the calendar on her phone. “s**t,” she whispered. “What babe?” he asked. “Hmm? Nothing.” She didn’t want to say anything until she was sure, but she had missed her last two periods. They had a solid relationship, but a baby would certainly put a strain on them with college coming up in the Fall. She figured she would wait a few more days before panicking. “Ok.” He put her hand in his and kissed it. For being a “burnout,” he was very sensitive and romantic. And he wasn’t afraid to show it. She loved that about him. Kathy was distracted all day at school. Waiting a few more days was definitely not going to be an option for her. After school, she asked him to stop at the drug store. She said, “I need to get some girl stuff.” She knew that would make him want to stay in the car. “Um, yeah, I’ll just wait here,” he said. She gave him a kiss. “Be right back.” “Alright.” Matt sat fiddling with his phone. She got out of the car and went inside. She made a beeline for the feminine aisle. There she stood before many pregnancy tests. She threw her head back. “Good god. Which one?” She grabbed one that was digital. She headed to the checkout. She didn’t see Charlene watching her until she got closer to the register. “So, what’s new?” she asked as she looked in her basket. Kathy jumped. “Oh god Charlene,” she said. She looked into the basket and then at Charlene. “Please don’t say anything to anyone, I’m begging you, not even Matt.” “I won’t, I promise,” she said. “But I do expect you to tell me the result.” She gave Kathy a hug. “I promise. Thank you.” “You might want to grab something like candy to distract him with when you get in the car. He won’t even look at the bag.” Kathy grabbed his favorite candy bar and paid. She smiled and hugged Charlene as she left. She reached his car with the candy bar in hand. She got in and said, “Here.” “Cool, you know how much I love these.” He gave her a kiss. As Charlene suspected, he didn’t look twice at the bag. “Where to?” “I don’t care.” She was distracted by the situation. “Ok, then we can go meet the guys at Mickey D’s. Oh, Char just texted me that she and Jeff wanted to have brunch with us tomorrow.” “That's fine.” Kathy shoved the test into her purse. She knew why the sudden invite. He opened her door for her when they got there. They went inside and there sat the gang. It’s like they’re inseparable. Some of the guys had girlfriends, but Matt was the only one who was truly committed to his. He didn’t spend all his time with them. He preferred the company of the love of his life. They wanted to make plans for the weekend. Matt's best friend Scott said, “How about we meet at the river tomorrow for the afternoon?” “Sure, the weather has been pretty warm, so it will be fun,” Matt said. “Can't wait for the water to get warm so we can swim,” Billy said. He was the closest to being the sensitive friend, but he was very loyal. “Freeze your ass off right now,” Dave laughed with a mouthful of food. He was the rough around the edges friend. “We have plans for the morning, so we won't get there until after two,” Matt said. Scott said, “That's fine, everyone is probably gonna to sleep in anyhow.” “Yeah, I'm not getting up early on a weekend unless I'm dragged out of bed,” Rob said. He was the joker friend. He would find humor in almost anything.
