The rest of dinner was full of small talk. I listened and ate and accepted the second beer Hitomi offered. When we’d finished and our hosts were clearing the table, I excused myself and dragged Katie into the entry hall. “What makes you think I want to join some random band?” I hissed. “They’re not asking you to join, they’re asking you to fill in for a weekend,” she returned, matching my volume.
