It took two days to arrange for Max Walsh’s mystery client to be squirrelled away in a safe house under the control of the witness protection program. When DI Reid and DS Strong arrived at the nondescript suburban house to interview him, they were surprised to discover that the informant enjoying their protection was Brad Poland, one of the drivers they had already interviewed in relation to Frank Jordan’s murder.
‘Change of heart, Brad?’ said DI Reid.
‘Yeah.’
‘Why should I believe anything you tell me, Brad? The last time we spoke you didn’t know anything about anything.’
‘Things change, Inspector.’
‘Oh? In what way?’
‘Before, they would have killed me for saying anything.’
DI Reid waited.
‘Now, they’ll kill me to make sure I don’t say anything.’
‘Who is they, Brad?’
