Chapter 14: The Unfinished Kiss and Time-Space Fluctuation

1397 Words
Xing Hun didn't pause in his movements, not even lifting his head as he replied naturally, "I don't have a girlfriend." Yue Yao's heart inexplicably skipped a beat, a secret joy quietly spreading through her. She couldn't help but press further, a hint of anticipation she herself hadn't noticed creeping into her voice: "If you had a girlfriend, would you often make cakes for her?" Xing Hun stopped the spatula in his hand, turned around, and looked deeply into her eyes. His voice was low and tender: "As long as she wanted to eat, I'd make it." Yue Yao's face flushed crimson in an instant, her heart pounding like a drum. She lowered her head and mumbled softly, "Being your girlfriend would be such a treat..." Just then, Xing Hun suddenly set down what he was holding and slowly moved closer to her. The kitchen seemed to shrink in an instant, his tall figure looming over her, carrying a suffocating pressure and... an allure. His gaze locked onto her flickering eyes, his voice as soft as a whisper: "Do you... want to be my girlfriend?" Yue Yao froze completely, her mind a blank. All she could do was watch helplessly as his face drew nearer, feeling his warm breath brush against her cheek. One of his hands gently cupped her face, his fingertips carrying a slight coolness, yet they only made the heat on her cheeks burn higher. His lips slowly approached, but just as they were about to touch her trembling red lips, they veered slightly off course and gently kissed away a bit of cream accidentally smeared on her cheek. "So sweet," he murmured, his gaze burning as it fixed on her. His lips drew near again, this time aiming unmistakably for her mouth. Yue Yao's body went rigid, her heart racing so fast it felt like it might burst from her chest. A strange emotion mixed with overwhelming panic surged within her. Just as his lips were about to land, an icy voice exploded in her mind—*No! You're Mei Guo now!* She snapped awake as if scalded, pushing Xing Hun away with force. Her words tumbled out incoherently: "I... I'll go check how the renovations outside are coming along!" With that, she fled, nearly running to throw open the front door, leaving Xing Hun standing alone, watching her retreating figure with a trace of loneliness and understanding in his eyes. Standing at the door was not a renovation worker but Tang Yu, who had returned. She held a bouquet of fresh flowers, still glistening with dew, freshly picked from her own garden, a gentle smile on her face. "Good morning," Tang Yu said, handing the flowers to the startled Yue Yao. "I live next door. The weather's nice today, so I cut some flowers for you." Flattered, Yue Yao took the fragrant bouquet and quickly invited Tang Yu inside: "Thank you! Please, come in and sit down." Tang Yu settled onto the sofa and immediately sensed the lingering chill in the air and the noise of the renovations. She frowned slightly. "Why is it so cold? The air conditioner isn't fixed yet? And what's all that outside?" Yue Yao sighed and sat down beside her. "Yeah, I nearly froze to death last night. They said a virus hacked the smart home system. We're reinforcing the defenses today." She rubbed her temples. "Ugh, I really don't get why so many people want to kill me." Tang Yu looked at her with a penetrating gaze, her words laden with meaning: "Maybe it's because you've harmed others' interests in the past, or maybe... just your existence blocks someone's way." Yue Yao gave a bitter smile, a hint of detachment that didn't quite fit "Mei Guo's" persona showing through: "If I start doing only good deeds from now on, would the number of people wanting to kill me decrease?" Tang Yu was amused by her words, her tone softening slightly. "Mm, it should decrease quite a bit. If a person is loved and respected by others, even if they pass away, they'll be honored and remembered. But if someone is wicked and infamous, their death only brings cheers, and no one even bothers to collect their body." Yue Yao seemed lost in thought, then straightened her back as if she had made a decision. "Then I want to die with dignity! Not like a rat scurrying through the streets!" Tang Yu saw a light in her eyes, something almost pure that she had never seen in Mei Guo before. She dropped her smile and spoke seriously, "Alright, let's not talk about such heavy topics. I came here with a request, one I hope you'll grant." "Whatever you need, just say it," Yue Yao replied immediately. "I want to personally take charge of finding my daughter," Tang Yu said, her gaze fixed intently on Yue Yao, not missing a single subtle expression on her face. "The recruitment of female employees who are immune to the fungus—I want full responsibility for it." Yue Yao's heart stirred. This was exactly what she wanted! It was the perfect opportunity to legitimately search for Tang Yu's daughter, fulfill her promise, and also ease Tang Yu's hostility toward her. "Done!" Yue Yao agreed readily. "I'll take you to the company tomorrow to handle the paperwork. This project is all yours!" Tang Yu hadn't expected such a quick agreement. Surprise and gratitude flickered in her eyes. "Thank you!" Just then, Xing Hun walked out with the beautifully decorated chocolate cream cake, its surface adorned with intricate patterns and exuding a rich, sweet aroma. "The cake's ready! Let's eat together!" Yue Yao's attention was instantly captured by the cake, her eyes sparkling, temporarily forgetting the earlier awkwardness and the surrounding dangers. "It's gorgeous! My favorite—chocolate cream cake!" Xing Hun sliced the cake and handed the first piece to Tang Yu. Tang Yu took the plate, staring at the delicate chocolate cream cake in her hands. Her eyes grew distant and sorrowful, as if she were looking through the cake into a distant past. "My daughter... she loved chocolate cream cake too. When she was little, I used to make it for her... She'd eat more than half of it herself, her little belly always round and full, and she'd still beg for more..." Yue Yao's smile faltered slightly, a soft spot in her heart touched. She said gently, "Ha... your daughter must have been very cute." Fu Yuan came downstairs, drawn by the aroma. He walked over to the coffee table, cut himself a large slice of cake, and stuffed it into his mouth, mumbling praise: "Delicious!" Xing Hun shot him a disdainful glare. "Get lost, that wasn't for you!" Thick-skinned as ever, Fu Yuan deliberately picked up the only cream rose on the cake and held it to Yue Yao's lips, throwing a provocative look at Xing Hun. "Here, darling, the most beautiful rose for you—ah—" Yue Yao looked at the cake by her mouth, then at Xing Hun's displeased expression and Fu Yuan's expectant face, and felt a headache coming on. Reluctantly, she opened her mouth and ate it. Just then, the doorbell rang again, more urgently than before. Xing Hun frowned and went to open the door. Standing outside was not a renovation worker but a refined, elegantly dressed middle-aged man, followed by a team of engineers who looked even more professional, armed with various precision instruments. The leading man saw Xing Hun and bowed respectfully, a hint of concern in his expression. "Young Master Hun," he said, his voice steady as he bowed slightly, "I've brought the company's top engineers to assist you!" A flicker of surprise crossed Xing Hun's face. "Uncle Lu? Why did you come in person?!" The man called Lu Xuan patted Xing Hun on the shoulder, but his sharp gaze swept over Yue Yao in the living room, scrutinizing and probing. He lowered his voice, his tone grave: "Given the sacrifice you've made this time, practically 'selling' yourself, you must have foreseen some serious trouble. Since I'm the most 'idle' person in the company, I decided to lead the team myself." He paused, his voice dropping even lower, almost to a whisper. "Also, we've detected abnormal space-time fluctuations... Hun, did you use time reversal against the rules again?"
