My friend and I sat at the back as he drove to our school,
"Guys there is a change of programmes, there is something urgent I need to attend to at home," he said and continued, "so, I will drop the guy home first then I drop the lady, we can do this some other day."
I knew he just wanted to have a word with me and I had made him go through the sophisticated procedure to talk to me.
he dropped my friend at his place and then drove to the hotel.
When we entered the room, he slapped my left chick, then I fell on the floor.
I couldn't believe what was going on at that moment because, how on earth would someone I see naked slap me? I couldn't believe he had slapped me.
"This is to show you that I'm way older than you to be disrespected or cheated on."
I stood in anger and responded,
"but are you not cheating on someone yourself?"
At that point all the respect in me had left, all I felt was resentment because, even the time my father was alive, I had never seen him slap my mother.
"You mean, my suspicions are right, you slept with that boy?"
"Yes!" I screamed it to his face and left the room.
"Good morning honey," Mom said while standing in my bedroom doorway as I sat on my bed updating my music list on my laptop. She seemed a mess because her apron was filled with flour.
My mother loved baking, she said it reminded her of how she met my father in college, these two shared a very happy story, sad my father passed on the time I was eight years old. My mother showed no signs of sorrow or sadness which worried me so much because I knew she was hurting but she kept the pain inside.
I stood from my bed and hugged her.
"Mom, you are not supposed to bake all the time."
"Well, no one will if I don't, plus you need to have your breakfast on time, I need to make sure that happens so that you are always strong and healthy."
"Well, from now on, I will wake up early to make my breakfast, you should take your time in bed and have your beauty sleep, I will serve breakfast for you in bed."
She laughed and said, "Look who is talking as if you would manage to get up early."
I had breakfast with my mother that morning, and after a long time, I was trying my best to forget about the abuser (my old man). I knew that if I tolerated what he did to me the other day, it would become a habit and I would become a punching bag. I wasn't ready to lose my beautiful self for a man who had already lived his life and had nothing to lose.
I stayed away from my window, studied more, just to distract myself and did more school activities just so I could feel like a normal teenager once again.
This day I was coming home from school and I met him with his wife down the street from our block, buying ice cream. He called me, for a moment I didn't want to go because, it felt like an insult but, just to avoid suspicions, I went.
"Hey Mwinjileni, this is my wife, Rose, rose this is Mwinjileni Ms. Davies's only child, our neighbour." He introduced.
"Nice to meet you, Miss Rose, "I said as I forwarded my hand to shake hers. We shook hands then she said, "The pleasure is mine young star."
Young star? My heart burned, did this woman know what used to happen behind closed doors for her to call me young star? I immediately excused myself.
I forced myself not to think about what happened, as I was doing my level best to stay away from that man, like my mother always said, "When you see danger, run as fast as you can and never look back."
That night, my dear old man texted me,
"where are you?"
"Home why?" I was trying my best to withstand him but deep down, I was crying for him.
"Let's meet at the cafeteria."
We had a cafeteria just a few metres from our block where people met to have some alone time, I went there to meet new people as part of my hobby.
I met my old man at the cafe in my sleeping gown.
"Should I get you anything?" He asked.
"No thank you, I'm good," I responded
"I'm sorry for what I did last time, I was really angry because, I didn't believe that you'd do that boy what you usually do to me, and I saw it as disrespect."
"Well not everything is about s*x, he and I were just studying that day."
Seated in my room, on my bed, Mom invites me to the living room to say hi to a visitor, I wondered who it was this time. You won't believe what I saw, it was my old man's beautiful wife, seated comfortably with legs crossed on my mother's couch. My heart almost skipped out of my chest when I saw what she had put in her neck, it was my black head wrap, the one she had argued with her husband about.
"Hello, how are you?" I said to her from a distance.
"Hello, Mwi. Mwi. Aha, I'm not good at African names," she said in a calm and sweet voice.
This woman was a hundred, I wondered why the husband would even look at another.
"Oh, it's Mwinjileni," I responded
"Okay." She said arrogantly and started pressing her phone, it seemed as though I had irritated her.
"She has no friends around, so she has come to seek company from us."
said, mom.
"Yes, I guess you will see me more often now," she said with a smile.
