The Lady in Black

1083 Words
Francis felt someone poking his corpse.   He suddenly reacted, finally waking up from his dead-like sleep.   He woke up with a start, and the lady in black was staring at him.    He was still at the house, its remains and destruction still evident.   He decided to move, to get up, and finally noticed the piece of wood still piercing his body.   He no longer was bleeding, for some reason, and the rest of his injuries had healed.   He broke the piece of wood, so that now he wasn’t stuck to the floor.  He dropped down to the floor remembering the contract he had made with her.  “You can take it out” she told him. She was referring to the wooden stake.  He took out the piece of wood and noticed that no blood left his body. The moment he took it out, he healed in a second.   He was terrified now.   “What did you do to me?” he asked her.   She gave him a smile.   “Francis died yesterday. He died in that same exact spot you are today. Right now, what are you is something that you must discover. I will tell you this, however. You are not a Hunter or Human.” she told him.   “Then, what about you?” he asked.   “Why, I am your owner, of course”  Francis did understand one thing. He died that night. He no longer was Francis, he gave up his first name, and was left with only his last name.   “Why, how childish. Since you died and no longer exist to this world, you should just forget about your name all together” the lady in black told him.   He gave up his first name because he was no longer human. He did not give up his last name because he still had one last thing tying him down to this earth.   He used to be Francis Drake. Now, he would only be known as Drake.  As they moved together, she told him that they should visit his grandpa’s house, to understand the first part of the job.  When they reached his house, Drake looked at what was waiting for him as if he had expected it. There lay his grandpa, dead.   He was observing his grandpa callously, as if this was something he had been expecting.  “This was the price paid for you to continue to live. What a brave man, giving his life in exchange for yours” she told him.  All that he felt was a cold indifference.   The woman came close to the man and closed his eyes.   “You may now depart this vale of tears”.  After that, they started to go towards their destination.   They now left the major city, in search for a small town in the outskirts of the kingdom.   They paid for a man to get them there in a small carriage. The woman read a book all the way there. She told him she never really worked anymore; she had grown lazy. But she told him she would go this time, just to show him what the nature of their job was.  Nighttime came, and Drake noticed he no longer needed to sleep. She told him that it was because of his nature.  Another clue to tell him exactly what he had become.   After two days of traveling, they finally reached the village, and she directly went inside a tavern.   She asked for food and a drink.   “Can I eat?” he asked her.   “Why, of course you can. If your question is if you must, then no, you do not really have to. But I recommend that you do. It makes you feel a little less like a monster”. she told him.   He ate, but too little. The woman ate, and after that started to drink. A lot.  “So, what are we doing here?” he asked.   “Just.... Just wait a minute”. she said.  And so, a strange man walked into the tavern.   This was the man they were, apparently, interested in.   After a couple of more drinks, both from the lady in black and the man, he finally went to leave. Drake looked at her and she got up.   They followed him till they reached an abandoned field.   The man then started to run, but the lady in black kept walking. She would know exactly where to find him, and she did.  “Who are you?” the man asked.   He had taken out a g*n and a knife.   “Oh, I am no one really. Just your friendly...” she was interrupted by a shot to the face.   Her entire head had been blown out. But no blood splattered. Instead, a black liquid started to ooze from her neck.   A second later, the creepiest thing happened. Her face regrew, and she was perfectly fine.   “How rude of you,” she told him.   Drake was not exactly surprised. He had, after all, healed an entire hole in his stomach.   But the man was surprised, though he did not panic. He just became warier.  “I guess the question is not who are you, but what,” the man asked.   “To you, I am a guillotine. The fist of judgment. An executioner. That is to say, I am the one that will judge you for all your sins,” and as she said all this, she raised her hand, and pointed her fingers towards the man, “and you, Jade Huckleberry, have been condemned” she told him.   The man started to shoot; again and again.   A strange fog-like smoke started to rise from the ground. It was black in color and with a special thickness. After it accumulated, the woman seemed to grab it, and she made an umbrella made of the smoke.   The smoke then went after the man, behaving like a snake.   The man shot the smoke, but it kept going, barely dispersing.   He made the quick decision of getting back, avoiding the smoke, but he did not notice the lady, now close to him. She grabbed him by the neck and lifted him up.   “Jade Huckleberry, you have committed an unsurmountable number of crimes. r****g children, killing for enjoyment, torturing victims, and filicide. Your soul is now forfeit, and you shall be erased from this world” she told him.   And just like that.   The man died.
