“What the hell do you think you’re doing here?” Andrew’s tone was shock mixed with anger as he glared at Angela. Angela planted herself in front of the door with her arms crossed and her lips pressed together, staring at Andrew and then at Samantha. There was anxiety all over the office, the kind that could be felt even from a distance. “I could ask you the same thing,” she snarled, her eyes boring into Samantha with pure hatred. Samantha fidgeted in her chair and felt like a voyeur watching a very intense soap opera. She could see Andrew’s lips tighten, his hand going to the telephone on his desk. He dialled a number and kept staring at Angela. He glared at the phone and snapped, “Sarah, why is Angela in my office? I told you I was not available. ” The receptionist’s voice came out of the speakers, sounding rather stressed and apologetic. “I’m sorry for this Mr. Caldwell, she rushed in; I was unable to prevent her from coming in. ” Andrew hung the phone on the hook roughly and this caused Samantha to get startled. “Angela,” he said the words out, his voice rough and strained, “you need to go, you need to leave, now. ” “I won’t until you tell me who she is!” Angela fired back, pointing at Samantha with a royal, red-tipped nail. Samantha blushed under the stare and couldn’t help but look down. She wanted to slip away, to bury herself in the softness of her seat and be out of this extremely uncomfortable position. “I don’t think you have the right to know that,” Andrew snapped, and it was clear that he was getting rather annoyed. Angela laughed, but her laugh was nasty and devoid of any humour. “None of my business? You’re my cousin, Andrew, And we were” “Were,” Andrew interrupted her abruptly. “We are finished Angela, you have seen to that.” Samantha was surprised to hear this. This then was the ex-girlfriend Andrew talked about. The pieces of the puzzle were beginning to fit and what she saw was not a smooth picture at all. Angela had to glance at Samantha again and her face became stern. “And you,” she said, hatred oozing from her voice. “You have no business being here; you are not fit to live in his world. ” Samantha felt herself blushing and she wanted to say something, to explain herself, but she was unable to speak. She was tiny and looked like a child lost in this luxurious office, she could feel the rough texture of the clothes she wore and the scuff marks on her shoes. “That is enough!” Andrew yelled, his voice bouncing off the walls. He was on Angela in two swift steps. The events that occurred next seemed to be slow-moving. Andrew raised his hand quickly and then Angela fell on the floor as he had slapped her hard and the sound was so loud. A tense silence filled the room and all that could be heard was the sound of breathing. Angela was surprised and she quickly raised her hand to her hot cheek. The signs of shock and anger were painted on her face one after the other. This made her mad and she could no longer hide it, “How dare you?” she screamed. Before one could blink, she attacked Samantha pulling her hair with force. Samantha cried out in pain, she immediately attempted to grab Angela’s hands trying to free herself. She never thought that she would be in the middle of this family conflict. Andrew reacted fast and grabbed the situation; he hugged Angela around the waist and dragged her to the side, making sure she was out of Samantha’s reach. “Security!” he shouted out loud in the office, his voice was deep and powerful. In less than a minute two rather large men in security uniforms stormed into the office. They looked at the scene going on, Andrew trying to hold down a struggling Angela; Samantha sitting in her chair and looking scared, her hair messy. “Get her out of here,” Andrew said in a tone that did not allow for any protests. The guards looked at each other, then, each taking one of Angela’s arms. They held her arms firmly and she tried to free herself from their hold, her high-heeled designer shoes scraped the floor as she was pulled towards the door. Angela looked at Andrew and he said, “This isn’t over Andrew,” in a very angry tone. “You listen to me, I won’t let you be with any other woman, you are mine!” The door shut with a bang, ending on Angela’s last remark. A tense atmosphere settled over the office and the only thing that could be heard was Andrew and Samantha’s breathing. Andrew looked at her and smiled, his eyes taking in the somewhat messy appearance of Samantha in front of him. “Are you okay?” he asked, keeping the worry he felt very apparent in his tone. Samantha nodded and felt the back of her head where Angela had seized her. “Oh, yes, I believe that is true,” she replied, her voice trembling. “What…what was that all about?” Andrew frowned deeply and collapsed into the chair. He appeared to be suddenly drained, and the result of the confrontation was beginning to rest on him. “That was Angela,” he said, pointing to the door, “She was my ex-wife and my cousin. ” “Your cousin?” Samantha repeated and her eyes widened in amazement. “Yeah, it’s. . . complicated,” Andrew said while raking a hand through his hair. “We were having a love secret affair then. Though It was wrong. She…she betrayed me. ” Samantha’s lips curled into a small. “Sorry,” she uttered in a low tone not knowing what else to say. Andrew flicked his hand in the air as if he was erasing a chalkboard. “It’s history. Or at least, it should be. She does not agree with that.” He was still pondering on the events that had happened due to Angela’s interruptions and the atmosphere was still thick with tension. Samantha was stunned and her head was spinning thinking about all that she had just witnessed. Finally, Andrew spoke up, “Look,” “I know that this alters things for you, so if you are thinking of rejecting my contract marriage proposal, consider your sick mother who needs the money urgently, your poor siblings, and the poverty that's dealing with you also.” Samantha burst into tears.
