WITHINNothingness surrounded them, in contrast to the primal power Toria knew the artifact contained. Not a vacuum, because she could breathe. Not a storm, because no wind buffeted them. Other than the pressure of Victory’s hand in hers, she felt—absence. No light and no darkness. No sense of movement, even as Toria’s gut told her she hurtled through space. No ability to move, she found as she tried to turn her head. In panic, she strained for her shields. But she had no power to draw from, no energy in this shadowy field of naught. Just Victory’s hand, clutched in her own. She opened her mouth to scream, then slammed into a pile of rubble.
