Lyra broke in before Toria had to figure out an answer. “She’s a mage, Kojo. They know things like this about their friends.” The pleading tone in her voice could be heard through the exhaustion. “Toria says our child will be okay. Isn’t that wonderful?” Under the weight of Kojo’s glare, Toria nodded her head in a short, jerky burst. “It’s true. Perfect health.” Now that she’d seen the baby, the power settled within her, a gentle, contented purr. “I should, ah, get to work. Leave you two to get to know your son.” “That won’t be necessary.” Kojo flicked one hand. “You were hired to watch out for Lyra. Now that she will not be working, your services are no longer needed.” Lyra gaped at him. “Kojo—” The baby squirmed in her grip, distracting her as she settled him against her other breast.
