The streets of Kirio were paved with the same russet stone that clad all the buildings, but each time Mina came to an open piazza, of which there were many, white and slate stone alternated with the red to make ornate star patterns. Each square had a fountain at its centre, and the city’s celestial theme continued in the decorative elements around each fountain. Whether big or small, they depicted stars or suns or moons, usually in white stone marbled with an iridescent shimmer. A local instructed Mina to follow the main street that led straight ahead from the divina to find the market. Proceeding with caution, she had still only passed through a few piazzi before she saw a cluster of men and women near a moon-themed fountain, scanning the crowd a little too closely. They wore no costumes
