The door opened.
Daniel expected darkness.
Instead, he found a bright room filled with thousands of glass containers.
Each container held a glowing memory.
He walked between them.
One showed Emily laughing.
Another showed his daughter taking her first steps.
Another showed Daniel building the machine.
He reached for a container marked LIFE 1.
The moment his fingers touched it, everything changed.
He remembered.
He had not built the machine to save his daughter.
He had built it to save himself.
The truth struck harder than any nightmare.
His daughter had been healthy.
Emily had been healthy.
Daniel had created the tragedy inside the simulation.
He had erased his own memories because he could not accept what he had done.
The container shattered.
A voice spoke behind him.
“You finally remembered.”
Daniel turned.
The old man stood there.
“You.”
The old man nodded.
“I am the first Daniel.”
“Then why am I here?”
“Because you were never supposed to reach this room.”
Daniel looked around.
“What happens now?”
The old man smiled sadly.
“The house decides which memory survives.”
Suddenly, every glass container began cracking.
Emily appeared on a screen.
“Daniel, run.”
The lights turned red.
A countdown appeared.
00:60.
Daniel stared.
“What happens at zero?”
Emily answered:
“The house chooses a Daniel.”
The countdown dropped.
Fifty-nine.
Fifty-eight.
And somewhere above them, a child began laughing.
It was waiting.
