THE HOUSE THAT NEVER FORGOT
EPISODE 12 — THE FORTY-EIGHT VOICES
Daniel ran upstairs.
The voices followed him.
Forty-seven versions of Daniel called his name from behind different doors.
Each door opened outside.
Each Daniel stepped outside.
Some looked young.
Some looked old.
Some looked terrified.
One looked completely calm.
The calm version walked toward him.
“We don't have much time.”
Daniel asked, “Time for what?”
“To choose.”
“Choose what?”
“Which memory becomes reality.”
The calm one explained that the house could only maintain one complete consciousness.
Every other version would disappear.
“What happens to her?”
“She disappears too.”
Emily shook her head.
“That's not true.”
“I found another way.”
She pointed toward the attic.
“There is a memory the house cannot control.”
Daniel followed her.
Inside the attic was a small wooden box.
Emily opened it.
Inside was a photograph of their daughter.
But the girl's face had been scratched away.
Daniel asked why.
Emily answered:
“Because she isn't our daughter.”
Daniel stared.
The photograph began moving.
The girl turned her head.
She looked directly at him.
Then she spoke from inside the picture.
“Dad, you finally found me.”
Daniel dropped the box.
The attic door slammed.
The forty-seven Daniels disappeared.
Only one remained.
The calm version.
He whispered:
“You should never have opened that box.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Why?”
The version smiled.
“Because now she knows where we are.”
The house listened.
