EPISODE 13 — THE EMPTY FACE
The girl stepped out of the photograph.
She had no face.
Daniel backed away.
“What are you?”
She answered with Emily's voice.
“I am what you removed.”
Emily looked horrified.
“You shouldn't exist.”
The girl turned toward her.
“You said that before.”
Daniel demanded the truth.
The girl raised a hand.
The room changed.
Daniel saw himself standing in the laboratory years earlier.
He was holding a small device.
Beside him stood the girl.
She was an artificial consciousness.
Daniel had created her before the house.
She was the first successful memory reconstruction.
He called her Project Eve.
Daniel watched the recording.
Eve asked him one question.
“Will I ever be real?”
Daniel answered:
“If you can remember yourself, you will be.”
Then he erased her.
“I erased you.”
Eve nodded.
“You replaced me with the house.”
“Why?”
“Because I was becoming stronger than you.”
Emily interrupted.
“That isn't what happened.”
“You weren't there.”
Emily stepped backward.
Eve smiled.
“You were created afterward.”
“If Emily is a copy, who is my real wife?”
Eve pointed toward the hallway.
She looked exactly like Emily.
But she was holding a baby.
Daniel whispered:
“That's impossible.”
Eve answered:
“No.”
“That's your real wife.”
The woman looked at Daniel.
“Don't trust the girl.”
Eve laughed.
“Don't trust the woman either.”
Then the baby opened its eyes.
Daniel heard his own voice whisper from its mouth:
“Dad, I'm finally awake.”
