THE 48Th Life EPISODE 3 — THE HOUSE REMEMBERS Daniel opened his eyes. The apartment was silent. He remembered the girl's final words. "It was me." Emily was gone. The girl was gone. Only the photographs remained. Daniel picked up number forty-seven. A sentence appeared on the back. SHE IS NOT YOUR DAUGHTER. His phone rang. 2:13 a.m. He answered. A woman whispered, "You have three minutes." "Who are you?" "Someone who lived here before you." "What house?" She laughed. "The house you keep forgetting." Suddenly, the walls began changing. The apartment became older. The furniture vanished. The wallpaper peeled away. A nursery appeared beneath the living room. Inside stood a wooden crib. On the wall was a photograph. Daniel stepped closer. It showed Emily holding a baby. Beside her stood another woman. Daniel recognized her. It was his mother. Except his mother had died fifteen years earlier. The phone whispered: "Listen carefully." The nursery door slowly closed. "You were never born in this house." Daniel stared. "Then why does it remember me?" The woman answered: "Because the house doesn't remember you." A pause. "It remembers what you did." Three knocks sounded. Daniel turned. His reflection was standing there. Smiling.
