About 58 million years ago, many species of archaic mammals appeared that would evolve continuously and mutate into the present-day mammals but also into the primitive cetacean marine mammals. The climate was tropical while modern-day plants and families of primates followed after the extinction of the dinosaurs. The first large mammals appeared about 56 to 34 million years ago.
