Chapter Twenty-SixStanding still on the bloodied trail, I listen to the sound of my breath and the steady thump of my heartbeat as it echoes in eardrums. It's too simple, the way I feel. A sense of accomplishment sets in, but it's minor, as if I'm back in high school and just handed over a final essay. The kind of assignment that only took a few short days to write, but I know for a fact I will pass with flying colors, so I want to celebrate. I'm empowered, as I am with every kill, yet it's tainted with an undercurrent of disgust and self-loathing. It isn't until I start dragging her body reality sinks in. Oh my God, what have I done?
