The morning sun was already peeking through the curtains when Tara forced her eyes open. She groaned softly, stretching before finally pushing herself up.
She dragged herself to the window, unlocked it, and let the cool morning breeze brush her face. Taking a deep breath, she whispered to herself, “Another great day… a new life.”
For the first time in a long while, those words didn’t feel empty.
After quickly making her bed and brushing up, Tara padded into the kitchen where the familiar aroma of breakfast wrapped around her like comfort.
“Good morning, Amma,” she said, slipping her arms around her mother from behind and planting a soft kiss on her cheek.
Her mother chuckled. “Good morning, sleepyhead. Late again.”
Tara grinned, reaching for her favorite yellow cat-shaped mug. She poured herself coffee and held it close, letting the warmth seep into her palms. With mug in one hand and her laptop tucked under the other, she walked straight to the balcony.
The world outside was alive with chirping sparrows and distant street sounds. Settling into her chair, Tara pushed her round glasses up her nose and opened her inbox.
She hesitated.
The HR girl at the company had told her yesterday: “Selected candidates will get an offer letter by tomorrow morning.” But Tara hadn’t allowed herself to hope. After the storm of yesterday’s interview, she was sure the opportunity had slipped away.
Still… her heart beat faster as she clicked on Refresh.
One unread mail.
Her breath caught. She rubbed her glasses nervously, slipped them back on, and stared at the glowing blue screen.
The subject line read: “Offer of Employment — Fresher Position.”
Her fingers trembled as she clicked it open.

Tara’s lips parted in disbelief. Selected? She blinked rapidly, as if the words might vanish if she looked away.
A squeal broke her trance.
Her younger sister, Tanya, had peeked from the staircase, backpack slung over her shoulder. “Didi! You got it?”
Tara looked up slowly, eyes wide, still processing, before nodding.
“Yesss!” Tanya screamed, jumping two steps at a time before launching herself onto Tara with a bone-crushing hug. “Congratulations! You’re officially employed!”
Before Tara could respond, Tanya had already dashed down the stairs, shouting at the top of her voice: “Ammaaa! Didi got the job!”
Her mother peeked out from the kitchen with her hand still holding a ladle, eyes widening. “Really? Tara!”
Tara nodded, still clutching her mug like it was the only thing keeping her grounded. Her mother’s face lit up, pride shining in her eyes.
At that exact moment, the front door opened. Her father stepped in, towel around his neck, fresh from his morning walk.
“Why so much screaming, Tanya?” he asked, frowning playfully.
“Papa!” Tanya ran straight to him. “Didi got the job! She’s selected!”
He froze for a second, then turned to Tara. His serious expression melted into the warmest smile as he walked up and pulled his elder daughter into a firm hug.
“My Tara…” he said softly, voice thick with pride. “See? Hard work always pays off. This is just the beginning. Work hard, stay humble, and remember—you’re stronger than you think.”
Tara bit her lip, her throat tightening as tears pricked at her eyes. For the first time in years, she felt like she had stepped onto a path forward.
She smiled through the tears, nodding. “I’ll make you proud, Papa.”
And in that moment, as laughter and chatter filled the house, Tara realized—this wasn’t just another day. This was her new beginning.
Her mom dashed to the kitchen, grabbed a handful of sweets from the shelf, and plopped a big ladoo into Tara’s mouth before handing some to everyone else. “So, what should we prepare to celebrate this happy moment?” she asked, eyes twinkling.
She quickly called her husband, Rajesh, and told him to head to the market and get everything needed for a big feast.
Meanwhile, Tanya—the family’s resident lazy potato—saw this as the perfect opportunity. With a sly grin, she nudged her father, trying to convince him to grant her a day off. But one sharp glance from their mother made her shrug, pick up her bag, and head to school.
Amidst all the chaos, Tara remained glued to her computer screen, her eyes wide and unfocused. Her mind was still shivering with disbelief, and she didn’t even realize how long she’d been staring. Confused and overwhelmed, she finally grabbed her phone and dialed the one person she trusted with her whole heart—her best friend, Anika.
Anika picked up almost instantly, greeting her with a playful, romantic “Good morning!” before roasting her just a little.
Tara barely contained her excitement as she blurted out the news. “I got the job!”
There was a moment of stunned silence, then Anika’s scream pierced through the line. “WHAT?! That’s amazing! Oh my god, Tara!”
Tara laughed, but then her voice dropped a little. “There’s… um, there’s one more thing I want to tell you.”
“Okay, spill it!” Anika said, bouncing in excitement.
“I want you to meet me today,” Tara said, her heart racing.
There was a pause. “Tara… you know it’s peak time here at the café. Come at 7 PM, then I’ll be free,” Anika replied.
The call ended, and Tara’s eyes immediately returned to the screen. She stared at the offer letter again, her hands trembling slightly. Tonight couldn’t come soon enough.
