“Amy… Silas hired her to seduce me,” James said, his tone low and somber, as if he were delivering a verdict rather than an accusation.
I couldn’t stop it—the laughter burst out of me, sharp and uncontrollable. “What?” I managed between gasps, the absurdity of his claim echoing in my ears.
“Jade, I’m serious,” James snapped, his lips thinning in frustration.
“Serious?” I said, struggling to breathe through my laughter.
I shook my head, wiping my eyes as I fought to regain control. How did I ever think about marrying this man? The question struck me, followed immediately by the answer I didn’t want to admit. Because you didn’t love him. And that felt safe.
