Chapter 3: A Dangerous Offer

1211 Words
The gala finally began to wind down close to midnight. Guests slowly drifted toward the exits, their voices lowered but still buzzing with the scandal that had unfolded earlier in the evening. Waiters moved quietly around the ballroom, clearing empty champagne glasses and folded napkins, while the orchestra packed away their instruments. But even as the party faded, the whispers remained. Aria Lawson and Lucien Vale. The names had been paired together all night. Aria stood near the terrace doors, her arms folded lightly as she watched the last guests leave. The adrenaline that had carried her through the evening was slowly fading, leaving behind a strange mixture of exhaustion and clarity. Everything had changed in a matter of hours. Her engagement was over. Her relationship with Daniel was shattered. Her reputation had been dragged through the mud in front of the city’s elite. Yet strangely, she didn’t feel broken. She felt… awake. Lucien appeared beside her again, his presence as quiet and commanding as it had been all evening. His tuxedo jacket hung loosely over one shoulder now, and the top button of his shirt had been undone, giving him a more relaxed but still intimidating appearance. “Ready to leave?” he asked. Aria glanced toward the ballroom once more. Her parents were speaking quietly with a few relatives, clearly trying to smooth over the social disaster that had just unfolded. Daniel and Vivienne had disappeared hours ago, likely after realizing the crowd’s sympathy had shifted. “Yes,” she said softly. “I think I’ve had enough excitement for one night.” Lucien nodded once. “Come with me.” Outside the Estate The cool night air wrapped around them as they stepped outside the grand Lawson estate. The long driveway was still lined with expensive cars and chauffeurs waiting patiently for their passengers. But the moment Aria and Lucien appeared together, a small cluster of photographers near the gate suddenly stirred. Flashes burst through the darkness. Aria froze. “Oh no.” Lucien didn’t even blink. The photographers began shouting questions immediately. “Miss Lawson! Is it true you ended your engagement tonight?” “Lucien! Are you two dating?” “Did Daniel cheat on you?” “Is this the new power couple of the city?” Aria felt panic start to rise in her chest. She had dealt with media attention before, but never like this. Never in the middle of a scandal. Lucien calmly stepped closer to her. “Look at me,” he murmured. She did. His dark eyes were steady, grounding. “Don’t react,” he said quietly. “Just walk with me.” His hand settled lightly on the small of her back, guiding her toward a sleek black car parked near the front of the driveway. The gesture looked intimate enough to feed the cameras, but controlled enough to keep things from spiraling. Aria could already imagine tomorrow’s headlines. Lawson Heiress Leaves Gala With Billionaire After Engagement Scandal. Great. Lucien opened the car door for her. “Get in.” She slid into the back seat quickly, the leather cool beneath her hands. Lucien followed a moment later, closing the door firmly. The noise of the photographers instantly faded as the driver pulled away from the estate gates. For the first time all night, silence filled the space between them. The Ride Through the City The city lights passed by the windows in streaks of gold and white. Aria leaned back against the seat, finally allowing herself to breathe. “That,” she said slowly, “was insane.” Lucien glanced at her, one eyebrow raised. “You handled it well.” She laughed softly. “I think I handled it like someone who just watched her life explode.” Lucien studied her carefully. “And yet you didn’t fall apart.” Aria stared out the window. “I almost did.” The memory of Daniel’s betrayal still burned inside her chest. She had spent years building a future with him—planning a life, imagining a marriage, trusting him completely. And he had destroyed it in a single moment. Lucien’s voice cut through her thoughts. “You deserved better.” The quiet certainty in his tone surprised her. She turned toward him. “You barely know me.” “True.” “Then why help me tonight?” Lucien didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he watched her with that same calculating gaze she had noticed earlier in the evening. Finally, he spoke. “Because most people would have collapsed under that kind of humiliation.” Aria crossed her arms. “And I didn’t.” “No,” he said. “You adapted.” His lips curved slightly. “That interests me.” Lucien’s Offer The car slowed as it approached a quiet intersection. Aria tilted her head slightly. “You keep saying that,” she said. “Interesting.” Lucien met her gaze. “You are.” She felt a faint warmth rise to her cheeks. “Is that your billionaire flirting technique?” Lucien chuckled softly. “No.” Then his expression shifted—becoming more serious. “I’m going to make you an offer.” Aria blinked. “An offer?” “Yes.” She frowned slightly. “What kind of offer?” Lucien leaned back against the seat, studying her carefully. “The press already believes something is happening between us.” She sighed. “Thanks to those photographers outside my house.” “Exactly.” He paused. “So we use it.” Aria stared at him. “Use it?” Lucien nodded. “We pretend to date.” The words hung in the air between them. Aria blinked again. “You’re suggesting a fake relationship.” “Yes.” “Why?” Lucien’s gaze sharpened slightly. “Because it benefits both of us.” She waited. “You regain control of the narrative,” he continued. “Instead of being the woman who got cheated on, you become the woman who moved on with someone better.” Aria hesitated. “And you?” Lucien’s lips curved faintly. “Let’s just say… there are advantages for me as well.” She narrowed her eyes. “That’s suspiciously vague.” Lucien didn’t deny it. “All you need to know is that this arrangement would be temporary.” “How temporary?” “Three months.” Aria leaned back, processing the idea to. Three months pretending to date the most powerful billionaire in the city. It sounded insane. And yet… It would drive Daniel absolutely crazy. Lucien’s voice softened slightly. “But the decision is yours.” The car finally pulled to a stop outside her apartment building. Lucien looked at her steadily. “Well?” he asked. Aria stared at the city lights reflecting in the car window. Her life had already changed tonight. Maybe it was time to stop playing safe. She turned back to him. “What are the rules?” she asked. Lucien’s smile was slow and dangerous. “Now that,” he said, “is the right question.” And suddenly, Aria realized something. This arrangement might start as a rebound. But with Lucien Vale… Nothing would stay simple for long.
