"Where is she?" Violet yelled, rushing forward.
Her father grabbed her by the arm and spun her to face him. "Violet?" he said, staring deep into her eyes.
Violet did not say anything, but her father must have recognized something in her face because he pulled her into a strong bear hug.
She was still angry at him, and would probably never forgive him, but he was her father, and something deep inside her identified him as a symbol of refuge and safety. She was so terrified of what had just happened, and from the residual fear leftover from what had happened to Ryan's family, that she welcomed the relief of that safety. Just for a second, she let herself be fooled by the comfort of that hug. Then she pushed him away.
