Chapter 13: The Breaking Point
The envelope lay on the dining room table while silence filled the house.
Olivia stared at it with trembling hands.
"I don't understand," she whispered. "Who would do this to us?"
No one answered.
Ethan exchanged a quick glance with Emily before turning back to his wife.
"The police are investigating. We'll find whoever is responsible."
Olivia nodded, but the fear in her eyes remained.
After the officers left, Marcus carefully examined the envelope.
"He wants to create distrust," he said. "Every message has the same purpose—turning you against one another."
"So what do we do?" Emily asked.
"We stop keeping secrets."
Emily's heart pounded.
She knew Marcus wasn't talking about her feelings, but his words struck a nerve.
Later that evening, Olivia went upstairs to rest. The day's events had exhausted her.
Emily stood on the back porch, staring into the dark garden.
"I should leave," she said quietly.
Ethan stepped outside behind her.
"You don't have to face this alone."
She shook her head.
"That's exactly the problem."
He frowned.
"What do you mean?"
Emily took a deep breath.
"Every time we're together, someone takes another picture. Someone sends another threat. If I stay away from you and Olivia, maybe this will finally stop."
Ethan looked at her with concern.
"This isn't your fault."
"It feels like it is."
Before he could reply, they heard a loud crash from inside the house.
"Olivia!" Ethan shouted.
They rushed into the living room.
A large stone had been thrown through the front window, scattering broken glass across the floor.
Wrapped around the stone was another note.
Ethan picked it up.
His face went pale.
"What does it say?" Olivia asked as she hurried downstairs.
He hesitated.
Emily gently took the note from his hand and read it aloud.
"The next secret won't arrive on paper. It will arrive in person."
A cold silence settled over the room.
Marcus immediately called the police.
As the officers searched outside, Emily noticed movement near the front gate.
A hooded figure stood beneath a streetlight, watching the house.
Without thinking, she ran after him.
"Stop!"
The stranger disappeared around the corner.
Emily chased him through the empty streets until she reached a dead end.
There was no one there.
Only a small silver snake ring lying on the ground.
She picked it up, her hands shaking.
For the first time, they had something the stalker had accidentally left behind.
And somewhere in the darkness, the scarred man smiled.
"Lose one ring..." he murmured.
"...and they'll never notice what I took instead."
