Chapter 15: The Letter from the Past
The house was eerily quiet after Victor Hale's phone call.
No one could forget his chilling words.
"You should have burned the file years ago."
Marcus paced across the study, trying to piece everything together.
"If Victor stole that file, it means he wasn't just stalking you," he said. "He was searching for something hidden inside it."
Ethan rubbed a hand across his face.
"My father never told me what was in those records. He only said they should never fall into the wrong hands."
Olivia looked from Ethan to Marcus, confusion filling her eyes.
"Someone needs to tell me what's going on."
Ethan sighed.
"I wish I had answers."
Just then, the doorbell rang.
Everyone froze.
Marcus cautiously walked to the front door and looked through the peephole.
"No one's there."
He opened the door slowly.
On the welcome mat sat a small wooden box.
Inside was an old, yellowed envelope sealed with red wax.
Across the front, written in elegant handwriting, were the words:
To Ethan Moretti. Open only when the past returns.
Ethan's breathing became uneven.
"I've never seen this before."
Marcus nodded toward the envelope.
"Open it."
With trembling hands, Ethan broke the seal and unfolded the letter inside.
It was written by his late father.
«My son, if you are reading this, then the secret I protected has found its way back to you. There was once a man named Victor Hale. I trusted him like a brother, but greed turned him into my enemy. He believed our family stole something that belonged to him. He swore he would one day destroy everyone who carried our name.»
Ethan stopped reading, his voice shaking.
Olivia gently placed a hand on his shoulder.
"What else does it say?"
He continued.
«Victor will search for proof, but the truth is not in the business records. It is hidden where no one would think to look. Protect your family before you protect the secret.»
Silence filled the room.
Marcus carefully folded the letter.
"So Victor stole the wrong file."
Emily frowned.
"Which means he'll keep looking."
Before anyone could speak again, Olivia gasped.
"My necklace..."
She touched her neck in panic.
"The necklace my mother gave me... it's gone."
Everyone searched the house, but it was nowhere to be found.
Then Emily remembered Victor's final words in the alley after she found the snake ring.
"They'll never notice what I took instead."
Her heart sank.
"The file was never his real target," she whispered.
Marcus looked at her.
"You think he wanted Olivia's necklace all along?"
Emily nodded slowly.
"If the truth is hidden where no one would think to look..."
She looked at Olivia's empty neck.
"...what if the secret has been inside that necklace all these years?"
At that very moment, miles away in an abandoned warehouse, Victor Hale opened a small velvet pouch.
Inside lay Olivia's necklace.
With a satisfied smile, he pressed a hidden catch on the pendant.
It clicked open.
A tiny rolled piece of paper slipped into his hand.
Victor unfolded it, and his smile widened.
"At last," he whispered.
"I've found what I've been searching for."
