Chapter 4: The Shadow in the Night
Emily's heart raced as she glanced into the rearview mirror.
The black sedan was still behind her.
She took a left turn.
So did the sedan.
She turned onto another street.
Again, it followed.
Her palms grew sweaty as fear crept into her chest. Without thinking, she grabbed her phone and called the first person who came to mind.
"Ethan..."
He answered on the second ring.
"Emily? Is everything okay?"
"I... I think someone is following me."
His voice became serious immediately.
"Where are you?"
She told him her location.
"Stay on the main road. Don't stop. I'm coming."
Within minutes, Ethan's SUV appeared from the opposite direction. The black sedan slowed, then made a sharp U-turn and disappeared into the darkness.
Emily finally pulled over, her hands trembling.
Ethan rushed to her car.
"Are you hurt?"
She shook her head.
"No... I'm just scared."
Without thinking, he wrapped his arms around her.
"It's okay," he whispered. "You're safe now."
For a brief moment, Emily forgot everything except the comfort of his embrace.
Then reality crashed over her.
She gently stepped back.
"I'm sorry," she said, avoiding his eyes.
"You don't have to apologize," Ethan replied softly. "Anyone would have been frightened."
He insisted on driving behind her until she reached her apartment safely.
Before leaving, he smiled reassuringly.
"Call me if you need anything."
Emily nodded.
"Thank you... for everything."
As Ethan drove away, she watched his taillights disappear into the night.
She knew she had to stop depending on him.
Every moment they spent together made it harder to ignore what she felt.
Meanwhile, inside the mysterious black sedan parked several streets away, a man lowered his phone after taking a picture of Emily and Ethan standing together.
"So," he muttered with a cold smile, "this is going to be much easier than I thought."
He pressed send.
The photo was delivered to an unknown recipient.
Within seconds, a reply appeared.
Keep watching them.
The stranger smiled.
The real game had only just begun.
