Chapter 7: A Dangerous Discovery
Emily couldn't stop thinking about the anonymous photograph.
Every glance over her shoulder made her uneasy. Every unfamiliar face felt like a threat.
The next morning, Ethan arrived unexpectedly at her apartment.
"I've been thinking about those photos," he said as soon as she opened the door. "I don't think this is random."
Emily stepped aside to let him in.
"What do you mean?"
"I asked a friend who works in private security to look into it. He checked the area near your apartment."
"And?"
"He found security camera footage."
Emily's heart raced.
"Did it show who was following me?"
Ethan nodded slowly.
"It showed the black sedan... but the license plate was fake."
Emily's shoulders slumped in disappointment.
"So we're back where we started."
"Not exactly."
He handed her a printed screenshot from the footage.
The image was blurry, but one detail stood out.
The driver wore a silver ring engraved with the shape of a snake.
"I've seen that ring before," Emily whispered.
"You have?"
She frowned, trying to remember.
"I can't remember where... but I'm sure I've seen it."
Just then, Ethan's phone rang.
It was Olivia.
He answered with a smile.
"Hey, sweetheart."
Emily watched his expression soften as he spoke to his wife. The familiar ache returned to her chest, reminding her once again that no matter how close she and Ethan became, there was a line she could never cross.
"We'll be there soon," Ethan said before ending the call.
"Olivia wants us to come over for dinner."
Emily hesitated.
"I don't think that's a good idea."
"Why?"
"I feel guilty every time I'm around you both."
Ethan looked at her with concern.
"Emily, you're Olivia's sister. You're family. Don't let whoever is doing this push you away from us."
She gave a small nod, though her heart remained conflicted.
That evening, the three of them shared dinner, laughing over old family stories. For a while, everything felt normal.
But as Emily helped Olivia clear the table, her eyes landed on a framed photograph sitting on a shelf.
Standing beside Olivia and Ethan was a man wearing a silver snake-shaped ring.
Emily froze.
"Who is he?" she asked quietly.
Olivia glanced at the photo.
"Oh, that's Ethan's cousin, Damien. He visited us a few months ago."
Emily stared at the picture.
The ring.
The same ring.
A chill ran down her spine.
Could Damien be the one who had been watching them?
Or was someone trying to make it look that way?
Outside the house, hidden behind a row of trees, a shadowy figure watched the lights through the window.
"You've noticed the ring," the stranger whispered with a smile.
"Good."
"Now let's see where your suspicions lead you."
