Shattered Dreams

The countdown to midnight echoed in Emma's chest, each second ticking closer to a moment she had imagined for months. The air was crisp, the smell of fireworks and celebration heavy in the night. She adjusted the small box in her hand, feeling the excitement swell inside her. That was it. The moment she’d been waiting for—the moment she would share the best news of her life with Liam. Liam. Her husband. The man who had once been her everything. They had built a life together, entwining their dreams in ways that felt as though nothing could ever tear them apart. And tonight, New Year’s Eve, in the middle of a dazzling party filled with laughter and clinking glasses, Emma knew this was the perfect moment. As the clock hands crept closer to the top, she slipped through the crowd, her eyes fixed on the man she loved. Liam was standing near the balcony, his tall frame unmistakable, his piercing blue eyes scanning the room with that familiar air of quiet authority. He looked every bit the CEO he had become, confident and commanding, yet when his gaze landed on her, his face softened. The warmth of his smile still made Emma's heart flutter, just like it did when they first met. She walked toward him, her heart thundering in her chest. “Liam,” she called softly, her voice barely rising above the festive hum of the party. He turned toward her, his lips curving into that private smile she had always cherished. "Emma," he murmured, stepping forward and wrapping his arms around her. “You look stunning tonight.” Her heart squeezed. His touch, his words, still had the power to make her feel like she was the only woman in the world. She knew she had to tell him now. There was no more waiting. No more second-guessing. They were about to start the new year, and she wanted it to be the start of their new beginning. "There's something I need to tell you," Emma said, her voice trembling just a little as she pulled away from him slightly. Her hands shook as she opened the small box she had been hiding in her pocket. Liam's brow furrowed in curiosity. "What is it?" Emma’s fingers trembled as she pulled out the tiny ultrasound picture, the one that would change everything. She handed it to him, her breath catching in her throat. His blue eyes scanned the image, his expression unreadable for a moment. Then, slowly, his gaze shifted back to hers, and a flicker of confusion crossed his face. “Emma… what is this?” he asked, his tone a little more distant now. Her heart sank, the smile on her face faltering. “Liam… I’m pregnant.” For a long, agonizing moment, he didn’t say anything. He just stared at the picture, his expression unreadable. Emma’s heart pounded harder, her joy beginning to slip through her fingers like sand. Finally, he blinked, a slow breath escaping his lips. "Are you sure?" His voice was gentle, but there was something in his tone—something that felt off. Emma’s pulse quickened, her mind spinning. She opened her mouth to say something, but before she could, a soft, melodic laugh broke through the tension. Emma looked up, and her world shifted. Sophia Bennett. The woman who had been a thorn in her side for years. The woman who had always been a little too close to Liam, too friendly, too… everything. Emma watched as Sophia approached them, her long blonde hair cascading over her shoulders, her sharp blue eyes glinting with a familiarity that Emma didn’t want to acknowledge. She wasn’t surprised to see her here—it was a party, after all—but the way she sauntered over, her gaze flicking between Liam and Emma, made Emma’s stomach twist with something darker than mere jealousy. “Liam,” Sophia said, her voice a soft purr, her hand slipping casually onto his arm. “I thought I might find you here.” Liam stiffened slightly under Sophia’s touch, but before Emma could say anything, he gave a tight smile, his gaze flickering briefly to Emma before returning to Sophia. “Sophia, I didn’t expect to see you.” Sophia’s smile widened. “I wouldn’t miss the party. And it seems I’m just in time to see you both celebrating.” She shot Emma a glance, the kind of glance that carried with it a subtle warning. “How are you, Emma? Enjoying the festivities?” Emma’s throat tightened as she tried to hold on to the joy that had just moments ago consumed her. “I’m fine,” she said coolly, her fingers still gripping the ultrasound picture in her hand, the edges of the paper starting to crinkle under the pressure. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off—something was happening right now that she couldn’t quite explain. Sophia smiled, but it wasn’t a smile for Emma. It was a smile meant for Liam, a smile that Emma knew all too well. It was the smile of a woman who thought she had something Emma didn’t. Liam shifted uncomfortably, clearly noticing the tension that had suddenly thickened the air between them. “Sophia, I—” Before he could finish, the countdown to midnight rang out, and the crowd around them burst into applause. Fireworks lit up the night sky, their bright colors reflecting in the window of the party room. But Emma wasn’t looking at the fireworks. She was looking at the man she loved, the man who had just stood there, silent and distant, as another woman flirted with him in front of her. Her chest tightened as the cheers and the sound of popping champagne bottles filled the air, but all she could hear was the pounding of her own heart, the ache of betrayal crushing her from the inside out. She felt as though the floor had fallen out from beneath her. Without a word, Emma turned and walked away. She didn’t look back. She couldn’t. The dream she had been holding on to—the one where she and Liam had everything, where they shared their perfect life together—was gone. Shattered in an instant. She left the party without a second glance, her chest tight with grief and fury. Three years later, Emma’s life was different. She had moved on. Or at least, she had convinced herself she had. Raising her daughter, Rose, had become the focus of her life. She was everything Emma had ever dreamed of—a bright light in a world that had grown darker in the aftermath of Liam’s betrayal. Emma had poured her heart into her café, building it from the ground up with sweat and determination, making it a thriving business that had become a staple in the local community. She’d learned to be strong, independent. But there were days—when the café was quiet and the world slowed down for just a moment—that she found herself thinking about Liam. About what they could have had. About the man he once was. And then, one rainy afternoon, everything changed. She was in the back of the café, wiping down counters and preparing for the evening rush, when the door opened with a soft chime. She didn’t look up at first. But when she heard that familiar voice—low and hesitant, but unmistakable—her breath caught in her throat. "Emma?" Liam. He stood in the doorway, looking just as he always had. Tall, with that rugged jawline, his piercing blue eyes now filled with regret. He hadn’t changed. But Emma had. And she wasn’t sure if she was ready to face the man who had shattered her heart so completely.
