When Amelia woke up in the morning, she glanced at the room, spotting her dress on the floor and noticed she was naked. She gathered the courage to slip out of bed and quickly changed, her movement hurried. She couldn't face the man she had spent the night with, and did not care to know how he looked was a problem. Amelia just wanted to leave the room at that instant, and so she did.
She quickly left the room in that instance to ensure that the man did not wake up to see her in the room.
As she left the room, the thoughts of what happened last night weighed on her mind.
She couldn't return to the house because she was still furious with Emily and Richard.
Amelia decided to go over to Helen's place. That was the only place she could think of so she headed to Helen's apartment.
“Amelia” Helen exclaimed, dropping the spoon and rushing over. “What happened? Where have you been all the while? I have been really worried about you, "Helen uttered.
Amelia just left the scene without letting Helen know about what happened, so Helen was really worried about Amelia's whereabouts.
“I was so worried that I had to make a complaint to a close-by station about you being missing only for them to inform me that they would do their work and get back to me”,Helen said.
Amelia's lips trembled as tears spilled down her cheeks. “It's over Helen, Everything is over.”
Amelia narrated the events that happened the previous day, how she walked in on Richard and Emily and the impulsive night at the bar. By the time she finished, Helen was seething.
“That…that witch!” Helen spat. “How dare Emily do this to you? And Richard, I can't believe you almost married that scumbag!”
“I don't know what to do,” Amelia whispered.
“Any details about the man who you had a one-night stand with?” Helen asked curiously.
“No, I have no information about him. I was only carried away by emotions.I'm just disappointed in myself”, Amelia said.
“You don't have to. I know you aren't the type that will do something like this on a regular day”, Helen comforted.
“I can't go home.My stepmother will just make everything worse and Emily…I can't look at her” Amelia whispered.
Helen sat beside her again, placing a comforting hand on her shoulder. “You are staying here” she said firmly, for as long as you need. We will figure this out together.”
The weeks that followed were crucial to Amelia's recovery. Helen takes care of Amelia like a sister and helped her regain her confidence.
It happened one morning, when Amelia woke up feeling nauseous.
At first, she dismissed it as stress, but when the sickness persisted for days, Helen grew suspicious.
“Amelia,” Helen said one evening, setting a pregnancy test on the table in front of her. “I think you need to take this”.
Amelia stared at the box ,her heart pounding. “You don't think…”
Helen gave her a stern look. “It's better to know than to guess”.
Amelia took the tube from the table and headed to the bathroom. A few minutes later she stood at the two pink lines on the test. Amelia trembled as a mix of fear and her beliefs washed over her. She was pregnant.
“Oh my god” she whispered, sinking to the floor.
Helen heard her voice and walked towards the door. “Amelia? Are you okay?”
Amelia opened the door, tears streaming down her face. “Helen, what am I going to do?”
Helen pulled her into a hug, expressing a means of sympathy and determination.
“You are going to figure this out, one step at a time. But first, have you been able to recall the man who you had a one-night stand with at the hotel?”
Amelia shook her head. “No. I don't even know what he looks like.”
Helen sighed. “Okay, then we will focus on you and the baby. We will take it one day at a time.”
Despite the support she was receiving from Helen, Amelia couldn't shake the fear of her stepmother discovering her pregnancy. Amelia was sure that once she found out, the situation wouldn't be as easy as it is, so she decided to hide it from everyone by staying indoors once the pregnancy started showing.
Amelia decided to stay at Emily's house. She managed to keep her pregnancy a secret from her parents even as her belly began to swell.
As her date approached, Amelia's pregnancy took a dangerous turn. She was experiencing severe discomfort and pains in her tummy.
During a particular frightening incident, Helen panicked and called the doctor, who confirmed Amelia was at risk of complications during delivery.
“She needs proper care,” the doctor said firmly. “This isn't something that can be managed at home”, the doctor advises, and then writes down some drugs that Emily should get for Amelia before taking her leave.
Helen was really concerned about Amelia's condition and the only way out was for Amelia to leave the house to get the proper care that she deserved.
“You should go to Aunt Sarah's,” Emily suggested. “She lives in the city and has access to better hospitals. No one will ask questions there. No one will find out about your pregnancy there.”
Amelia hesitated, unsure if she could trust Emily's motive. The fear of losing our baby outweighed her doubts and she also feared others knowing about her condition, especially her parents.
Helen encouraged her that aunt Sarah would take proper care of her, so she packed her things and left for Sarah's house, determined to give her child the best chance at a safe delivery.
Amelia arrived at Aunt Sarah's doorstep late in the evening, her heart heavy with worry and uncertainty. Aunt Sarah welcomed her with open arms. Her warm smile made Amelia’s heavy heart calm down. The older woman lives alone in a cozy townhouse, her home, a mix of antique charm and modern practicality.
“You should have come sooner” Sarah chided, gently guiding Amelia inside and helping her to the guest room.
“You don't have to be afraid, Amelia. Put your mind at ease. We are family now, so you can see this place as your home.”
Amelia couldn't hold back her tears. For the first time in months, she felt safe, supported and truly cared for.
