The Distance Between Us

707 Words
The next morning felt… strange. Too quiet. Too normal. Which was exactly why it felt wrong. I sat in front of the mirror, staring at my reflection—at her reflection. Silver-white hair. Pale skin. Eyes that didn’t belong to me. “…Luna,” I whispered. The name still didn’t feel like mine. A knock came from the door— But before I could respond, it opened. And they walked in. All of them. My husbands. Seven men Seven different presences. Seven people who were supposed to be mine… Yet felt the farthest from me. The first to step forward was Solren, the Lion. Golden eyes. Calm, commanding, and suffocating—like standing under the sun itself. “We’re here to confirm something,” he said. “…Confirm what?” I asked. His gaze sharpened. “Whether your actions yesterday were genuine.” A scoff came from the side. “…Or just another one of your tricks.” I turned. Leaning against the wall was Kael, the Wolf. Dark hair. Sharp eyes. A presence that felt like something lurking in the shadows. Unpredictable. Dangerous. “I don’t have the energy to play games,” I muttered. He smirked. “Funny. You never had energy before either, yet you still found ways to torment us.” …Okay, I deserved that. “…That’s enough.” A softer voice cut through the tension. Near the window stood Eryndor, the Deer. Gentle green eyes. Calm presence. For some reason, just looking at him made my chest tighten. “We didn’t come here to argue,” he said. “We need clarity.” Behind him stood Aeris, the Falcon. Light on his feet, sharp gaze—like he could take flight at any moment. Watching everything. Missing nothing. Near the door, leaning silently, was Nerion, the Merman. His deep blue eyes were distant… unreadable. Like the ocean—calm on the surface, but hiding something deeper. And then— I felt it. A familiar presence behind me. “…You’re all early,” Taika muttered. I turned slightly. There he was. Taika, the Tiger. The one I healed. The one I— No. We’re not thinking about that. The last one stood quietly in the corner. Almost unnoticed. But not weak. Never weak. Riven, the Fox. His red-tinted eyes held a quiet intensity, like flames waiting to burn. Seven husbands. All in one room. All watching me. “…What do you want me to say?” I finally asked. “That I’ve changed?” “That I’m suddenly a different person?” Silence. Because that was exactly the truth. And also something I could never explain. “…Yes,” Solren answered. I blinked. “…What?” “If that’s your claim,” he continued, “then prove it.” My brows furrowed. “Prove it… how?” Before he could answer— The door burst open. A gust of wind rushed inside as Aeris stepped forward from the entrance. His expression was serious. Tense. “…We have a problem.” The atmosphere shifted instantly. “What is it?” Taika asked. Aeris didn’t hesitate. “The Deer Clan.” My heart skipped. Eryndor stiffened. “…What about them?” Aeris’ voice lowered. “They’ve been attacked.” Silence fell. Heavy. Dangerous. “…By who?” Solren asked. Aeris looked at all of them. Then spoke. “Wolves.” I instinctively looked at Kael. He didn’t react. Not even slightly. Which somehow made it worse. “…This isn’t random,” Eryndor said quietly. “No,” Solren agreed. “It’s the beginning.” “The beginning of what?” I asked. Taika answered this time. “…A war.” War. The word echoed in my head. I had just started figuring out my situation… And now— This? “…What do they want?” I asked. Kael finally moved, pushing himself off the wall. A faint smile formed on his lips. His eyes met mine. Sharp. Knowing. “…Isn’t it obvious?” he said. “…Power.” A chill ran down my spine. And deep down— I felt it. This wasn’t just conflict. This was something much bigger. Something that would drag all of us into it… Whether I was ready or not.
