A Power I Was Never Meant to Weild

I didn’t sleep. Not even for a second. Every time I closed my eyes, I felt it again— The warmth. The closeness. The way I didn’t stop it. “…This is bad,” I muttered. Bad? That’s an understatement. I sat up, dragging a hand down my face. You really did it. “…Shut up.” You crossed the line. “I said shut up.” The air felt suffocating. I couldn’t even look at him. Taika stood a few steps away. Quiet. Watching me. “…Are you going to keep avoiding me?” he asked. “I’m not avoiding you.” “…You won’t even look at me.” “…That’s different.” “…How?” I clenched my jaw. “…Just is.” Silence. “…You regret it.” My chest tightened. “…No.” Too fast. Too sharp. Taika noticed. Of course he did. “…Then what is it?” I finally forced myself to look at him. “…I don’t understand it.” His expression softened slightly. “…You don’t have to.” “…Stop saying that.” “…Why?” “Because it doesn’t help!” My voice snapped— And the ground beneath us trembled. We both froze. “…Did you feel that?” Taika asked. “I didn’t do anything.” But even as I said it— The earth cracked. A jagged line split the ground between us, spreading outward like shattered glass. “…Luna,” Taika said slowly. “I said I didn’t—” The ground rose. Chunks of earth lifted into the air, suspended unnaturally as if gravity had forgotten them. My breath hitched. “…Okay,” I whispered. “…I definitely did that.” Taika stared at me. “…That’s my clan’s ability.” “I know that!” Why do I know how this feels?! The earth trembled again— More violently this time. Rocks shattered midair. The ground warped beneath my feet. “…Stop,” Taika said firmly. “I’m trying!” But the more I tried— The worse it got. The pressure inside me kept building. Heavy. Unstable. Like something was forcing its way out. “This isn’t right… this isn’t how this is supposed to work,” I muttered. The ground surged upward again— Then suddenly— A soft green light burst from my body. Warm. Gentle. It spread outward in a quiet wave. And just like that— Everything stilled. The earth lowered. The cracks sealed. The floating debris fell harmlessly to the ground. Silence. “…What… was that?” I whispered. Taika didn’t answer immediately. When I looked at him— My stomach dropped. He wasn’t just surprised. He was stunned. “…You just used two abilities,” he said slowly. “…That’s not possible.” “I know.” “…That’s not possible,” I repeated. “But you did it.” I shook my head. “…No. There has to be another explanation.” “…There is.” “…What?” Taika stepped closer. “…It started after last night.” My heart stopped. “…Don’t say it like that.” “…I’m saying it how it is.”. “…That doesn’t mean anything.” “…It might.” Silence fell. Heavy. Unavoidable. No. There’s no way. “That’s stupid,” I said quickly. “That’s not how powers work.” “…Then explain this.” I couldn’t. Because I felt it. That connection. Still there. Faint. But real. “…This is bad,” I whispered. “…Yeah.” “…This is REALLY bad.” Taika exhaled slowly . “…We can’t tell the others.” I snapped my head up. “…Why not?” “Because we don’t understand it.” “…So we hide it?!” “…For now.” I clenched my fists. You gained this because of him. “…No way.” Think about it. “I am thinking about it!” Taika frowned. “…Who are you talking to?” “…No one.” “…Right.” Silence settled again. “…Luna.” “…What?” “…Whatever this is,” Taika said quietly, “…we’ll figure it out.” I looked at him. “…Together.” My chest tightened. This is how it starts. Attachment. “…Yeah,” I muttered. “…That’s exactly what I’m afraid of.” Because the power wasn’t the only thing changing. I was. And I didn’t know if I could stop it.
