Katie groans from her sleep as there’s loud knocking on her door. She lazily moves her feet lazily as she makes her way to the front door, she stumbles with her keys before peeking through her door only to find Dussel Ross leaning on the wall while clutching his bloody arm.
“Holy s**t, Sergeant! What happened?”
“Bodyguard happened. Can I come in?”
“s**t, come in.”
“Thanks.”
“Are you being followed?”
“God damn no.”
“Because I swear if you lead an assassin here I will bloody murder you.”
Dussel chuckles lightly as Katie makes her remark. She is not intimidating at all. But nevertheless, he better shut his mouth before the little fiery princess literally kills him.
Katie takes her medical kits before telling Dussel to sit on the floor.
“You better not dirty my couch with your blood, I just finished cleaning it yesterday.”
It’s mandatory for each agent to have their own medical kits, because no one knows what can happen to them in a mere few seconds. But Dussel is just lazy, there’s no other appropriate word for him aside from lazy.
Katie cleans up the wound on Dussel’s arm as she interrogates him.
“So, how did you get this ugly wound.”
“This wound is not ugly, it’s sexy.”
“Yeah, whatever, so how did you get it?”
“I was trying to follow that Smith’s son, Caleb. Then this guy in black start chasing me. I think that’s his bodyguard.”
“I can tell this bodyguard is no ordinary man, seeing he caught up with you.”
“Yeah, his eyes look so dark, it was kind of menacing, it was like staring into soulless being.”
“Pfft, you can’t possibly stare on his eyes, you were defending yourself for God’s sake.”
Dussel snorts at that. It’s probably the only time when they can talk and joke in a relax manner. Talking about dark eyes, Katie is suddenly overwhelmed by the short meeting she had with someone this evening.
She still can remember the way that guy leans on his motorbike, with his all black attire, deep ocean blue eyes that pierce into her soul when she looks at him. She didn’t see his face entirely thanks to the black helmet he wore, but she can tell how gorgeous he is. Which was why she actually stopped her car for a sec just to exchange a few words with him, and she swears his voice is just the perfect huskiest, sexiest thing she ever heard.
She snaps out from her dreamland when Dussel hisses at the sudden mindless contact between the alcohol and skin.
“I will be very glad if you treat it carefully, Agent Campbell.”
“Then you shouldn’t come here in the first place.” Katie rolls her eyes.
She quickly finishes the bandage before returning to her kitchen to take a glass of water and giving it to Dussel.
“So what did you get from tonight’s spying?”
“I’ve been following Caleb ever since left the crime scene we were on, he’s nothing but a filthy rich snob. I didn’t actually get anything important, all he did was clubbing, drinking, and spending a whole lot of money.”
“Maybe that was only a façade, his bodyguard chased you right?”
Dussel shrugs at that and sips his water.
“What do you think if you purposely get close to him?”
“To Caleb??”
“Yeah, it might be easier to eavesdrop whatever his plans are.”
“That doesn’t sound bad. But why me?”
“You are the only capable candidate; I can’t get close to him and flirts with him. His bodyguard can shoot me dead before I get close to him.”
“He might be gay.”
“No, he’s not, you read the files. He banged girls.”
“That can actually happen to cover his preferences.”
“C’mon, what’s so hard about getting close to him? You got the pretty face, you got the curves, you got everything in top notch.”
“Maybe because he’s an asshole?”
“That he is. Doesn’t mean we can’t take advantage of that asshole.” By now Dussel has a full-blown laugh emitting from his shaking body.
In the end, Katie agrees to that, it might actually point her to a lead for her case.
It’s not that she’s not confident about her body or face, she just lacks communication skills. She needs the whole 2 years before she can actually chat like a normal person with Dussel. In the office she only talks to her Boss and Dussel (occasionally). And this is perfectly why she finds it really hard to think she needs to flirt with someone. And here she is, back to her undercover mission. Yay!
It’s around 12.30 am when Dussel finally moves his ass out of her flat. She literally kicks him out because she just wants to go back to her fluffy bed and duvet. She needs mental preparation because tomorrow evening she has to get close to Caleb, and for her that’s a really dreadful fact.
Katie never tries her luck with men, or women, she got no friends, all she wants to do is getting her job done. Ever since her mom passed away seven years ago, she is void of all emotions. The night of her mom’s funeral was the last time she shed her tears. After the Boss took her in, all she ever does is just training her body, neglecting to nurture her mental health. But she doesn’t need emotions, she needs to be emotionless, or else she can’t look at a dead body without gagging, let alone kills someone.
Yes, sometimes her missions include killings. She doesn’t approve it, but what the Boss says need to be done. She can’t disobey him, that’s like disobeying her belief. But eventually she grows used to it, she can kill someone like a killing machine without feeling guilty or remorse.
Yet even though a lot of things come into her mind, crashing to her like a f*****g bullet train, she still can imagine the piercing deep ocean blue eyes she saw this evening before she closes her eyes and dives to her dreamland.
