Chapter VIHis face was stern! It frightened her. What right had he to look at her like that? It seemed to undo all the beauty of the day that they had spent together. Her face was flaming, and for once her old pert self knew not how to explain. It suddenly seemed that she had committed some unpardonable offense. It made her angry to feel so. Who was he to look at her like that? “I’m dying for a smoke!” she said, assuming her old hard-boiled attitude, and laughing with a sharpness that startled even herself. “I thought maybe you had left some cigarettes about, but I see you haven’t!” He just looked at her, opened his lips as if to speak, and looked again. That look went with her for many a day. She could not quite analyze it. It was stern, it was sorrowful, it even had a tinge of disgust
