Third person's POV
Emery sat in the shadows at the dim corner table of the tarven, her fingers tracing the table. Ever since Jayden took Layla as his bride, something in her broke. Even though it was her plan all along, she couldn't help but realize how attractive Jayden was, and since then she yearned for him, even if it meant to ruin her sister's already strained marriage.
She no longer cared about her lover, Dexter, who was the reason why she tricked Jayden and Layla into sleeping with each other. All she wanted now was Jayden, and in order to do that, she had to make him despise Layla.
As Jayden entered, even though he wore a hoodie to disguise himself, she could still recognize him.
"Hey," she called, waving him over.
He approached, his brow furrowed. "Why this place?"
"It's more discreet, no one would suspect. Have a seat."
Jayden sat opposite her, hands folded on his chest. "What's it?"
"What's with the cold tone?" She arched her brow. "After all, we used to be a thing,"
He ignored her comment,"You said it was urgent, Emery. Get to the point."
She frowned. "Right to the point then," she said, adopting a playful tone. "Shall we toast to old flames?"
His frown deepened, not understanding her jest."I'm not here for games. What is it?"
She leaned closer. "I have information about your mother's death, I believe you deserve to know."
His eyes darken, "What do you mean? Speak plainly."
"Well," she leaned back, legs crossed. "Do you know Layla's mother?"
"No, not really, what about her?" He asked, his patience wearing thin.
She lowered her voice, "You see, She was the one who cursed your mother, I believe she's the one who killed your mother, Layla and her mother are from a cursed bloodline, really pathetic,"
Jayden scrutinized her. "Are you saying she is behind my mother's death?"
She tilted her head, "Well.. A curse could result in someone's death, Layla and her mother have one thing in common, they obsess over another person's property. I don't know the exact details, but it could have been as a result of jealousy," she shrugged. "Both clans have been close for a very long time. So maybe just maybe.."
A fire ignited in his eyes. "You're certain of what you're saying?"
She nodded, feigning sincerity. "I wouldn't lie about something so important, nor would I want to waste our time on senseless talks. I'm certain of it, it only makes more sense as to why she laid with you," she frowned.
He leaned back, his face looked lost in thought. It was almost as if he was in a conflict. Emery reached out for his hand,
"I know how you feel, the pain of something dear being ripped away from you, I felt that way too. When I saw her in your room,"
Without a word, he stood up. "I'm leaving."
Emery nodded, "Okay," she replied, her lips pressed in a thin line. "Just think about what I said."
He left the tarven and went back to the palace, a storm brewed inside him. His motive was to marry Emery who he assumed was his mate, and get revenge on their clan for killing his mother, but if it was Layla's mother's doing. Then he was living with the daughter of his worst enemy.
"How was the meeting?" Layla's soft voice spoke, He shot her a cold glance, silencing her immediately.
"I'm sorry." She murmured, before walking away.
"Alpha" Dexter, his beta approached him. "There are some reports of-" Dexter paused as he noticed the sour mood of the Alpha. "Is everything alright Sire?"
"Whatever it is you have to tell me, let it wait. I'm not in the mood."
"Of course," Dexter nodded, understanding that pushing further won't do any good. "I'll take my leave."
Jayden went to his office, a picture frame of his mother sat on his desk. He picked it up, carcassing it softly. From that day onward, he swore to find a way to get revenge if truly Layla's mother had a hand in her death, but for now, making Layla's life a living hell was his goal.
Days passed, and Jayden's malicious coldness grew heavier. Layla tried to talk to him countless times but failed, his ruthlessness became unbearable.
"Why do you treat me this way? Am I not your wife?" She asked, pain evident in her tone as she stared at him.
In her heart, she knew he was her mate and could feel the bond even if he didn't. But his sudden coldness was too much for her to bear, he had always been cold, but it became too much for her to handle.
"You were never my choice," he replied without looking up to her. "Can you leave my office? I'm busy."
The words cut deeper than intended, she held her chest taking deep breaths to calm herself down.
"Even if I wasn't your choice, don't I deserve to be treated properly, you may not love me but at least I don't deserve this."
He finally raised his head but looked at her, she looked away as she couldn't bear to see the hatred and disgust in his eyes.
"You deserve more." He stated, before turning his attention back to the file in his hand.
Frustrated, she stormed out of his office and ran to her. Dismissing her maid, she laid on the bed sobbing loudly, hoping for a miracle to happen.
TWO WEEKS LATER.
Layla paced in her chambers, the weight of unease settled in her chest. She could feel the bond between her and Jayden fading. It felt strange, her love for him was strong and she hated it because she wasn't supposed to love him if he was blind enough not to notice their bond.
So what was the reason behind the sudden pain? She held her chest, hoping to soothe the pain but it was pointless, her heart felt like it was set on flames.
It's been going on for weeks now, she thought to herself. I wonder what's going on? Why is this happening? "
"Luna?" Her personal maid, Irene spoke, interrupting her thoughts.
"Nothing.." Layla shook her head.
"It doesn't seem like nothing," Irene said with concern evident in her voice. "Is something the matter, Luna?"
Layla sat on the bed, running her hand through her hair in frustration. "I read something in a book,"
"Okay," Irene arched her brow.
"It's about a girl.. Her mate didn't love her but they still got married..so for some time she had been experiencing pains, unexplainable pains, it was as if the bond between her and her mate were the cause of the pain.."
"Oh, Irene sighed with relief, "is that what's bothering you?"
Layla chuckled nervously, she had hoped Irene didn't figure out that she was referring to herself, not a random stranger from an nonexistent book.
"Not really," she shrugged. "I'm stressed about something else,"
"Well," Irene leaned closer. "This happened to my mother and it turned out my father was cheating on her. I guess it means that her mate was unfaithful?" She tilted her head. "I could be wrong. But who knows?"
Doubt gnawed at Layla, but she pushed it aside. "Thanks. That means that her mate is a coward then,"
"A huge coward, Luna!" Irene laughed. "I hope nothing serious is the matter?"
"Nah," Layla forced a small smile. "I'm okay."
But deep down she knew she wasn't, she could feel it. Something was wrong, and if what Irene said was true, then it meant that Jayden was cheating on her.
But with who?
