Aileen swivelled to head back to the centre of town when her steps faltered, and she gasped. Callan eyed her panicked stare and asked. ‘What’s wrong?’ ‘The… That man.’ She stammered. His eyes sharp, Callan scanned their surroundings. There were a few figures huddled in blankets on the edge of the street. A couple of eyes trailed them through splintered windows on the dark flats above. Someone walked on the other footpath, minding their own business. The alley between the two pavements was damp from rainwater or sewage, Callan couldn’t be sure. But it wasn’t any of those things that had Aileen panicked. It was the inconspicuous man, leaning against Sláinte’s wall. Aileen spoke through clenched teeth. ‘That’s the man I told you about. The one outside Marley’s building who followed me.’
