Chapter Twelve
The car’s tyres screeched as he brought it to an abrupt halt. Flinging the door open, he ran full throttle into the hospital with Isla and Rory trailing behind.
He barely registered the bewildered nurse behind the emergency counter gawking at him. Nor did he notice the ubiquitous antiseptic that every hospital reeked of.
The emergency area was relatively quiet apart from a few children sobbing in one corner, clutching their hands. It was perhaps a broken arm or leg.
‘Aileen Mackinnon.’ His breaths came in short puffs as he clenched and unclenched his fists.
Someone placed a hand on his shoulder whilst the nurse spoke with her colleague.
After what felt like an eternity, someone from the hospital staff approached them. ‘Inspector.’
