Chapter 6 – The Final Confrontation

277 Words
The cavern roared with the hum of the lanterns as Amelia struggled against her captors. Harrow raised a lantern high, its green flame flaring. “One more soul, and the town endures.” But Amelia ripped the shard from her pocket, holding it up like a weapon. The lanterns flickered violently, their flames sputtering. Harrow’s eyes widened. “No! That doesn’t belong to you!” The shard burned hot in Amelia’s palm, its glow swelling until it matched the lanterns themselves. A voice—soft, mournful—seemed to echo in her mind: Break the chain. With a cry, she hurled the shard against the cavern floor. It shattered, exploding into a wave of blinding green light. The lanterns screamed. Flames guttered, swinging wildly as the cavern shook. The men holding her fell to their knees, covering their faces. Harrow stumbled forward, shouting, “You fool! You’ll doom us all!” But Amelia stood her ground. The lanterns one by one went dark, their light snuffed like candles in the wind. The humming ceased. For the first time in decades, silence filled the cavern. And from the piles of belongings, faint outlines shimmered—shadows of those who had been taken. They reached upward, whispering thanks before fading into the air, free at last. When the last flame died, Harrow collapsed, his face hollow with despair. “You don’t understand,” he gasped. “Without the lanterns, the darkness will come.” Amelia stared at him, chest heaving. “Then let it come. Better the truth than a lie built on stolen lives.” She fled the cavern as the ceiling cracked and stones began to fall.
