A miracle Unfolds

702 Words
Martha woke up to the soft beeping of machines and the distant murmur of voices in the hospital corridor. The sterile scent of disinfectant filled the air, but for the first time in months, she felt safe. She turned her head slowly, taking in the white walls, the blue curtains surrounding her bed, and the IV drip attached to her arm. She was still alive. A gentle knock on the door made her look up. A nurse, dressed in a crisp white uniform, entered with a clipboard in hand. She smiled warmly. "Good morning, Martha. How are you feeling today?" Martha tried to sit up, but a dull ache ran through her body. Still, she managed a small smile. "Better than I have in a long time." The nurse nodded. "That’s good to hear. The doctor will come in shortly to discuss your treatment plan. But I must say, when you arrived, none of us expected you to survive the night." Martha’s lips curved slightly. "I serve a God of miracles." The nurse’s smile deepened. "Then you are in the right place, my dear. We’ve seen miracles happen here before." A Battle Begins As promised, the doctor arrived shortly after. A middle-aged man with kind eyes, he introduced himself as Dr. Chisamba and took a seat beside her bed. "Martha, I won’t lie to you. Your cancer has progressed significantly. It will take a combination of treatments, a strong will, and—" He paused, glancing at her, "—a bit of faith to get through this." Martha chuckled weakly. "Faith is something I have plenty of, Doctor." Dr. Chisamba smiled. "That’s good. Because this won’t be easy. We will start you on chemotherapy immediately. It will be difficult, but you have already survived against all odds. Let’s see what else you can do." Martha nodded. She had already faced death; this was just another battle to overcome. Strength in Faith Days turned into weeks, and Martha endured each chemotherapy session with a quiet strength that amazed the hospital staff. The side effects were brutal—nausea, weakness, and pain—but she never complained. Every evening, she whispered the same prayer: "Lord, You have brought me this far. I trust You to take me further." The nurses often found her reading her Bible or singing hymns softly to herself. Other patients, some battling illnesses worse than hers, would gather around her bed to listen, drawing strength from her faith. Even Dr. Chisamba was astounded. "I’ve seen many patients, Martha, but I’ve never seen anyone fight the way you do." She simply smiled. "I am not fighting alone." News Reaches Tonderai Meanwhile, in the streets of Harare, Tonderai’s life had only grown worse. His bottle-collecting business barely sustained him. The guilt of abandoning Martha ate away at him daily. He had failed as a husband, as a man, and as a human being. One afternoon, as he walked through Mbare, he overheard two women talking. "Did you hear about Martha?" one of them whispered. Tonderai froze. "What happened?" the other woman asked. "She’s alive! The church took her to a missionary hospital, and she’s getting treatment. People say it’s a miracle." Tonderai’s heart pounded. He gripped the nearest wall for support. Martha was alive. He had left her to die, but God had not abandoned her. At that moment, something broke inside him. A deep, soul-crushing regret that nearly brought him to his knees. He had to see her. He had to beg for forgiveness. A Turning Point Back at the hospital, Martha continued her treatments. One evening, as she sat near the window, looking out at the sunset, Mai Rudo arrived with a bright smile. "Martha, I have wonderful news!" Martha turned, curiosity in her tired eyes. "What is it?" "The doctors ran new tests today. Your cancer has shrunk significantly. They said your body is responding far better than expected." Tears welled up in Martha’s eyes. She clasped her hands together. "Thank You, Lord." Mai Rudo hugged her. "God is working in your life, my dear. Your faith is being rewarded." Martha took a deep breath, feeling a renewed strength within her. She wasn’t just surviving. She was healing.
