Clifford Knight (1886-1963) was an American mystery writer who flourished in “golden age” of detective fiction. His series character was university Professor Huntoon Rogers, whose research took him (sometimes with others from the university) to exotic settings across the world.
The Affair in Death Valley takes place in Death Valley, California, where Huntoon Rogers is confronted with the body of a man who died in the arid vastness of the desert. Three cigarette butts tell a chilling story—someone stood by in cold blood and watched the old man die. The jacket copy calls is “a masterpiece of diabolical cunning”—and it’s right on the mark!
