“You two gotta hurry! Don’t want to miss your own graduation,” called Cavanaugh as she left the dorm and Polly and Aggie dashed in.
“We know; can you come help us?” Polly begged.
Mildred asked, “Are you guys just getting off duty? Night shift ended over an hour ago.”
“A lady I sat with all night waited til this morning to have her baby and begged me not to leave. Don’t even have my good uniform ironed. I’d planned to get off early enough to do that.” Polly took the stairs two at a time.
“Don’t worry, I can iron while you get beautiful,” Mildred reassured her.
“Lord, I need a bath, but I’ll be lucky to wash my face and put on some make-up.”
