One evening, Polly looked up from tending a young mother to see Sister Gregory observing. As Polly left the room, Sister said, “This is the first time I’ve had the opportunity to congratulate you on State Boards, Miss Garrity.” Polly blushed as Sister continued, “You are young but quite capable. Would you be interested in being the head night nurse in the maternity ward? Of course, there will be a slight raise in pay.” Polly’s smile lit up the dim hallway.
