Chapter 3: A Line in the Sand The word died hung in the air like a heavy, suffocating fog. Ethan flinched as if I had physically struck him. His hands dropped to his sides, his fingers twitching against the expensive fabric of his trousers. The raw agony written across his face would have moved the old Amelia to tears. It would have made her drop to her knees and beg for his comfort. But the woman standing here today felt absolutely nothing but a cold, burning need to protect her child. "Amelia..." Ethan’s voice cracked, sounding completely stripped of the arrogance he had walked into the room with. "Five years. You’ve been gone for five years. The math... the way he looks..." He swallowed hard, his dark eyes locked onto Jacob with a desperate, terrifying intensity. "He’s mine, isn't he? He’s my son." "Mommy?" Jacob chimed in, his little brow furrowing as he felt the heavy tension radiating through my body. He tugged tightly on the hem of my blazer. "Why is the tall man crying? Is he in trouble?" "No, sweetheart," I said, my voice dropping into a gentle, soothing register meant only for him. I refused to let my son witness the monster who had thrown us away. "The man was just leaving. Clara!" The boardroom door flew open completely, and Clara rushed in, her face pale and full of apologies. "I am so sorry, Ms. Morgan! He broke away from the nanny while she was signing the security logs at the front desk. I tried to catch him, but—" "Take him to my private quarters on the top floor, Clara," I commanded, not taking my eyes off Ethan for a single second. "Now. And ensure the security guards lock the private elevator." "Yes, Ms. Morgan. Come on, Jacob. Let's go see the big toy box I told you about," Clara said, quickly scooping my son into her arms. Jacob didn't protest, but as Clara carried him out, his dark, piercing eyes stayed glued to Ethan. He gave a small, stubborn wave, an innate habit he didn't even know he shared with the billionaire standing in front of him. The heavy glass door clicked shut, cutting off the sound of my son's footsteps. The moment Jacob was safely out of sight, the protective mother vanished, and the cold, ruthless CEO of Maison de l'Ombre returned. I turned to face Ethan, crossing my arms over my chest, letting the absolute ice in my soul radiate through the small distance between us. "Do not ever look at my son like that again," I whispered, the threat sharp enough to cut skin. Ethan took a ragged breath, the shock finally giving way to a sudden, violent flare of his natural, possessive anger. He stepped over the shattered pieces of the coffee cup, closing the distance between us until he was towering over me, his shadow completely blocking out the morning sun. "He has my eyes, Amelia!" Ethan roared, his voice shaking the glass walls of the boardroom. "He has my jawline! He has my stubborn personality! You can lie to the press, you can lie to the world, but you cannot look me in the eye and tell me that boy isn't a King!" "He isn't a King," I retorted, lifting my chin, refusing to step back even an inch. His name is Jacob Morgan. He carries my name. The name your high-society friends used to mock me with. The name I made powerful while you were busy playing husband to a liar." "Why didn't you tell me?" Ethan’s voice suddenly dropped, switching from rage to a broken, pleading whisper that twisted my stomach. He reached out, his large hands grabbing my shoulders before I could react. His grip was tight, desperate, as if he were trying to anchor himself to reality. "Amelia, if I had known... if I had even suspected you were carrying my child, I would have burned the entire city down before I let you leave. I would have torn up the marriage contract with Sophia." I looked down at his hands on my shoulders, then looked back up into his eyes with pure, unadulterated disgust. "Remove your hands from my body, Mr. King. Right now." He hesitated, his fingers tightening for a second, his possessive nature screaming at him to hold onto me. But the absolute deadness in my eyes forced him to let go. He stepped back, his chest heaving as he ran a frustrated hand through his thick, dark curls. "You left me in the dark," he muttered, his jaw clenching tightly. "You let me live a lie for five years while my son was growing up in a foreign country without a father." "You chose that dark, Ethan," I snapped, my voice finally losing its calm veneer, flashing with the brilliant rage I had suppressed for half a decade. "You sat in the Morgan mansion and watched your fiancé's mother call me an ungrateful wretch. You watched Sophia smear my reputation. You looked me in the eye and told me to pack my things because she was carrying your 'flesh and blood'. You wanted a family so badly, Ethan? You got one. Go home to Sophia and leave my son alone." "Sophia lost the baby three months after you left," Ethan said quietly, the words falling like lead weights into the space between us. I froze. A sudden, cold shock washed over me. "What?" "She had a miscarriage," Ethan explained, his expression turning entirely dark, full of an old, bitter resentment. "Or at least, that’s what the medical reports said. Our marriage has been nothing but a business arrangement since the day it started. We sleep in separate rooms, Amelia. We don't speak unless we are in front of the cameras. I haven't touched her since the day you disappeared." A bitter, mocking laugh tore from my throat. I couldn't believe the sheer audacity of the man standing before me. "A miscarriage? How convenient for her," I scoffed, shaking my head. "And you expect me to feel sorry for you? You want me to hand over my son because your little high-society fairytale didn't turn out the way you planned? You made your bed, Ethan. Now you get to die in it." Ethan’s eyes narrowed into dangerous, predatory slits. The guilty, broken man vanished completely, replaced by the ruthless tyrant who had conquered the American corporate world. He adjusted his jacket, his entire posture stiffening into an authoritarian stance. "I am not asking for your pity, Amelia," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a low, terrifyingly calm purr. "I am telling you how things are going to be. Jacob is my son. I will have my lawyers draft a paternity demand by this afternoon. If you refuse, I will drag you through every family court in this country until I get joint custody." The threat was meant to break me. Five years ago, it would have worked. Five years ago, the mere mention of a legal battle with King Enterprises would have sent me into a panic. But I wasn't that girl anymore. I walked over to the head of the table, picked up my tablet, and tapped the screen twice. A digital document flashed onto the large monitor mounted on the boardroom wall. "Go ahead," I said smoothly, gesturing toward the screen. "File the lawsuit, Ethan. Let's let the media know that the great, untouchable billionaire Ethan King is suing the 'Sovereign of Silk' for custody of a child he abandoned five years ago. Let's see what that public scandal does to King Enterprises' stock price." Ethan stared at the monitor, his eyes scanning the corporate data I had displayed. It was a breakdown of his company's current vulnerabilities specifically, their heavily leveraged international shipping routes that Maison de l'Ombre was currently funding through our joint venture. "I built your early database, Ethan," I reminded him, my voice dangerously calm. "I know exactly where your company bleeds. If you file a single legal motion against my son, I will pull our capital from the logistics contract, launch a massive short-sell on your stock, and tie your company up in international trade courts for the next decade. I will ruin you before your lawyers can even print the DNA request." Ethan looked from the monitor back to me, a sudden, twisted spark of admiration flaring in his eyes despite his fury. He had never seen me like this. He had never seen the woman who could match his ruthlessness stroke for stroke. "You've changed," he whispered, a dangerous grin tugging at the corner of his lips. "You've grown claws, Amelia." "You gave them to me," I replied coldly. "Now, get out of my building before I have security throw you out into the rain. Just like you did to me." Ethan stared at me for a long, silent moment. He knew he had lost this round. He knew that, for the first time in his life, money and power couldn't buy him an easy victory. He turned toward the door, but just before he pushed it open, he paused, looking back over his shoulder. "This contract binds us for the next three years, Ms. Morgan," Ethan said, his dark eyes burning with an obsessive, terrifying promise. "I will see you every single week. And I promise you, by the time this partnership is over, I will have my son. And I will have you back in my bed." With that final threat, he stepped out of the room, the glass door shutting firmly behind him. The moment he vanished from sight, the strength drained completely from my legs. I collapsed into the leather chair, my hands shaking so violently I couldn't even hold the tablet. I pressed my palms against my face, forcing myself to breathe, forcing the panic down. The ghost of my past had officially caught up to me, and he was hunting for the one thing I couldn't afford to lose. My phone suddenly buzzed on the table, the screen illuminating with a familiar, comforting name. Lucas Hart. I picked it up, my voice trembling slightly despite my best efforts to sound strong. "Lucas?" "Amelia," a deep, smooth, and instantly calming voice resonated through the speaker. Lucas Hart, one of the country's most powerful independent investors and my closest ally in the business world, sounded perfectly composed. "I just landed in New York. My security team informed me that Ethan King’s private vehicle was spotted outside your headquarters. Are you alright?" Hearing his voice felt like a lifeline in the middle of a stormy sea. Lucas had been the one who found me struggling in Paris three years ago. Unlike Ethan, he had recognized my worth immediately, investing heavily in my fashion line without demanding anything in return but my friendship. He knew about Jacob. He had protected us when we had nothing. "He knows, Lucas," I whispered, a single, hot tear escaping my eye. "He saw Jacob. He knows he's his father." There was a brief, dangerous pause on the other end of the line. The ambient noise of Lucas's private terminal faded as he spoke, his tone dropping into a fiercely protective, commanding register. "Stay inside the building, Amelia," Lucas ordered quietly. "Do not speak to the press, and do not sign anything from King's legal team. I am coming to pick you and Jacob up right now. Let Ethan King try his worst. He has no idea who he is dealing with." As I ended the call, I looked out the massive window at the sprawling, cold city below. The war had officially begun. Ethan was coming for my son, but he had no ide a that I wasn't fighting alone anymore. And this time, I was fully prepared to watch his entire empire burn.
