Ava's gut warned her to leave. Rather, she entered the car. With a gentle click, the door closed behind her. The sound echoed more loudly than it ought to have, like the last close of a chapter she would never be able to revisit. Her trembling fists were clenched in her lap as she sat still. Beneath her, the leather seat seemed chilly and strange. After everything that had transpired over the past hour, her chest still hurt. Her brother. The police station. The words of the lawyer. Your brother might be jailed for the next twenty years. The phrase kept coming back to her, each time piercing her heart more deeply. She could still see Ethan behind those icy metal bars, trying desperately to smile at her despite the fear that lurked in his eyes. He had always kept her safe. been the one protecting her from the brutality of the world. She was no longer able to defend him. Her throat clenched into a terrible knot. She blinked quickly, determined not to cry once more. He couldn't be brought home by crying. The charges would not be eliminated. The jail doors would still close behind him despite this. It seemed as if someone had put iron shackles around her heart and squeezed it till breathing became difficult. She had no idea who this mysterious man was or why he was interested in seeing her, She wasn't sure if getting into this car was the worst thing she had ever done. However, a single notion overpowered all the cautions that were shouting in her mind. If Ethan might be saved by this man... She would carry it out. Whatever "it" ended up being. If the price was right, she would swallow her pride, give up her comfort, and even put herself in danger. Because losing herself was much less painful than permanently losing her sibling. As the vehicle moved away from the curb, the man in the suit took the passenger seat. No one said anything. With her heart pounding in her ears, Ava gazed out the window. This was crazy. She was sitting in a police station thirty minutes ago when she found out her brother could go to prison for twenty years. And now? , In order to meet a man she had never heard of, she was now riding through the city with strangers. At last, the vehicle came to a stop in front of a massive glass building. Ava looked up as she stepped outside. The building appeared to go on forever into the skies. Tower of Blackwood. Near the door, the name was written in silver letters. People in pricey suits came and went from the premises. They moved aside as soon as they saw the man with her. Not with deference. terrified. Ava saw and She also disliked it. She was led to a private lift by the man in the suit. No one intervened to stop them. They were not questioned. Silently, the lift climbed. Ten stories. Twenty. Thirty. Forty. With each second that went along, her stomach grew tighter. The doors opened at last. The whole floor was vacant. There is no front desk. No workers. Not a sound. Just quiet. The kind of quiet that seemed costly. The type that belonged to strong guys. The man in the suit came to a halt in front of two massive black doors. He gave her a look. "Mr. Blackwood is waiting." He pushed the doors open before she could reply and left, Ava took a deep breath then entered. The office was enormous. The entire city was seen through windows that reached the ceiling. dark furnishings. walls that are dark. Everything is dark. It felt more like a throne room than an office. A man stood at the far end. He was facing away from her. He had one hand in his pocket. The other had a whisky glass in his hand. He remained still, ignoring her. He just stood there staring out over the city for a few seconds. As if she didn't exist at all. Ava became very irritated. "I am here." His shoulders tensed up a little. Then he turned And Ava lost her train of thought. He was younger than she had anticipated. much younger. tall, wide-shouldered, a distinct jawline, dark hair and a cold grey eyes that met hers right away. Her lungs felt to empty of breath. Not because he was handsome. But he was dangerously so. No. It was the way he gazed at her, As if he knew her already, As if he had spent years getting to know her. An odd shiver went down her back. They didn't say anything. There was a long period of stillness. "You're late." Then Ava blinked and said, "What?" His eyes did not waver. "You sobbed for twelve minutes before you got in the car." Her blood chilled. "What?" "You also took two walks around the block." A pause. "Indecisive." Ava gazed at him… How was he aware of that? It dawned on her gradually, he had been observing. Not today only, Longer…much longer. "Who are you?" His mouth's corner quivered. Not quite a grin. "Most people know who I am." “I don't." He appeared amused for the first time, as Ava folded her arms and said, "Interesting." "You are aware of my name." "Yes." "You are aware of my brother." "Yes." “You sent your men to find me." "Yes." Her annoyance erupted. "Then tell me what the hell is going on and stop talking in riddles." There was silence in the room. Damian just looked at her for a time. Around him, most individuals lowered their gazes. The majority were terrified. Ava wasn't. even right now, even when she ought to be. That delighted him in some way. He finally put his drink down. "Ava Sinclair." It felt weird how he said her name. Nearly intimate. "I am aware that June 17th is your birthday." Her heart skipped a beat. Ava froze, "I know you drink caramel coffee every morning." "I know hat you did not eat lunch today." Her face lost its colour. "I know you still carry the silver necklace your mother gave you before she died." Ava instinctively touched the necklace hidden beneath her shirt. Fear crept through her, real fear, because none of those things were public knowledge. "Who are you?" she whispered again, and Damian's eyes never left hers. The amusement vanished, replaced by something darker, intense, possessive. When he finally spoke, his voice was deadly quiet. "I am the man who can save your brother." Ava's heart pounded. "What do you want?" The room felt smaller. Damian moved forward one step. Then one more. Until they were only a few feet apart. Every nerve in Ava's body stiffened. She saw a scar close to his jaw for the first time. A small flaw on a flawless face. His eyes flicked to her lips, then back to her eyes. And his words chilled her to the bone as he spoke again. "What I desire..." A small smile appeared on his lips. “is what I've been searching for seven years.” Ava gasped for air. Seven years? Damian's gaze grew gloomy. And for the first time, she sensed something horrifying beneath his composed exterior. obsession. "Unfortunately, Ava, you…” He lowered his voice. "I've finally found it."
