Lenneth and her sisters Silmeria and Hrist had just finished a rigorous training session in Valhalla. Their bodies glistened with sweat, but their skills were sharper than ever. As they sat together, catching their breath, a messenger approached them. "Lenneth" the messenger called out. "Freya has summoned you to her quarters." Lenneth exchanged a glance with her sisters before nodding. "I shall go," she responded, her voice steady despite the flicker of curiosity in her eyes. With a final farewell to her sister, Lenneth made her way towards Freya's quarters. The air itself seemed to hum with energy, a testament to the power of the gods.
As she walked, Lenneth's thoughts turned to the reason for the summons. Why had Freya called for her presence?
Was it related to her training? Or was more significant a foot? She reached Freya's quarters, the building itself exuding a sense of power and authority. Lenneth took a deep breath, steeling herself for the encounter ahead, and knocked on the door.
"Enter," a voice rang out, clear and strong. Lenneth pushed open the door and stepped into the room. Freya stood across from her, her eyes meeting Lanneth's with a piercing gaze. The room was sparsely decorated, filled with the scent of burning incense, and bathed in a soft glow from the flickering candlelight.
"Lenneth," Freya said, her lips curling into a smile. "Thank you for coming. Please, sit." Lenneth complied, taking a seat in a chair opposite Freya. She studied the goddess, noting the way her hair cascaded down her shoulders like a waterfall of gold, and her eyes gleamed like amethysts.
"You called for me, my lady," she said, her voice even. Freya leaned forward slightly, her gaze never leaving Lenneth's face. "I have sensed something...unusual about you," she said, her voice low. "A disturbance in the energy that flows through you. Have you noticed anything different about yourself lately?" Freya continued to speak, her voice measured and thoughtful. "I have noticed that you have been taking longer than usual to collect the Einherjar from Midgard," she said. "Your sisters, Silmeria and Hrist, have been far more efficient in their duties."
Lenneth bristled at the implication in Freya's words. Was she suggesting that she had been slacking off in her duties as a valkyrie?
"It is true that I have been taking longer than usual," she admitted, her voice carefully neutral. "But I have not been slacking off. Each mission in Midgard requires careful planning and execution, and sometimes the circumstances are not so straightforward." Freya nodded, her eyes still fixed on Lenneth. "I understand that," she said. "But I cannot help but wonder if there is another reason why you are taking so long. Have you made any... acquaintances in Midgard? Have you formed any attachments that might be distracting you from your duties?" Lenneth felt a pang of surprise at Freya's question. How had the goddess guessed that she had been interacting with humans? She had been so careful to keep her activities in Midgard a secret from the gods. "I...I have been interacting with the humans, yes," Lenneth admitted, her voice sounding defensive even to her own ears. "But it is only in the performance of my duties as a valkyrie. I have not allowed any attachments to interfere with my work." Freya's gaze intensified, her amethyst eyes almost seeming to glow in the dim light. "Are you sure about that?" she asked, her voice taking on a skeptical edge. "Do not underestimate the power of emotions, especially for beings like us who are so closely connected to the lives of mortals. Even a slight attachment can cause a ripple in your energy." Lenneth felt a pang of irritation at Freya's words. Who was she to question her actions and motivations? "I am well aware of my duties and responsibilities as a valkyrie," she said, her voice taking on a sharper edge. "And I take them very seriously. The humans are just...interesting to me, that's all. Nothing more." Freya seemed to accept her response, though her expression remained skeptical. "Very well," she said. "I will take your word for it. But remember, Lenneth, that your duties as valkyries come first. Do not let your fascination with the humans cloud your judgment or distract you from your dutie Lenneth stepped out of Freya's chambers, feeling a mixture of relief and irritation. She had hoped to escape without further interrogation, but Freya's gaze had followed her to the very end.
As Lenneth walked through the halls of the palace, her mind began to recall her past missions on Midgard. The faces of the people she had met, the places she had been to, and the conversations she had had with them began to replay through her mind.
And as they did, she realized that Freya had been right. She had been spending more time in Midgard than she should, getting to know the humans on a personal level.
As Lenneth delved further into the memory, she could almost see it playing it playing out in front of her. She could remember finding him in the dungeon, alone and abandoned by his so-called friends. And she could remember the horror on his face when he realized that they had taken all of his belongings, leaving him with nothing. In her memory, she could see herself changing into her human form, approaching the man cautiously. She could recall her voice asking him why he was sitting there alone, abandoned by those who had once called themselves his friends. The man looked up at her, surprise etched across his face. "I...I was ditched by my friends", he said, his voice shaking slightly. "They took all of my stuff and left me here in this miserable place". Lenneth peering closer to the man, her expression a mixture of curiosity and concern. "What are you doing here exactly?" She asked him. The man looked up at her, surprised at the question. But he quickly composed himself and responded, "I could ask you the same thing. What are you doing in a place like this?"
Lenneth explaining to the man. "I'm a mercenary," She said, her expression one of cool professionalism. "I was hired by a guild to retrieve a treasure that's rumored to be buried somewhere down here in the dungeon." The man seemed surprised by her answer, his eyes widening in disbelief. "You're a mercenary?" He repeated, his voice laced with astonishment. "You don't exactly look like someone who goes around battling monsters, no offense."
Lenneth scoffing at his remark. "Looks can be deceiving," she said with her lips curling into a smirk. "I may not look like it, but I'm one of mercenaries around. I've taken on monsters and foes much scarier than you can imagine. " So why are you here in the dungeon?" She asked him, her voice taking on a more gentle tone. "You haven't answered my question yet. The man's expression sobered as he looked down at his hands, fidgeting nervously. " I was a adventurer", he said, his voice low. "I was here with my friends, trying to find a treasure. "And your friends left you behind, didn't they?" She asked, her toned gentle. The man nodded, his shoulders slumping as he remembered the betrayal. "Yeah, they did", he said, his voice laced with bitterness. "We had agreed to split whatever we found evenly, but they decided to double cross me and take everything for themselves". Lenneth see there were nothing worth finding, even can't feel the soul of einherjar. But the darkness deep in was waiting for her. As she preparing to leave the man called out. "Wait! Don't leave me yet", There might be more treasures here that I know of. "I'II tell you everything if you just help me out of these bonds",
She approached the man once again and began to undo the ropes that his friends had bound him with. The man spoke urgently. "There are hidden tunnels and secret chambers here. My friends didn't know about them, but I do. Supposedly, they hold valuable treasures. If you help me find them, I'II split everything with you, I promise." Lenneth paused, eyeing the man skeptically. "Are you telling me the truth?" she asked, her tone laced with suspicion. "These hidden tunnels and secret chambers, they really exist?" The man fished through his pockets and pulled out a tattered map. "I have a map", he said, unfolding it to reveal a scribbled drawing of the dungeon layout. "See here? These markings indicate some of the secret chambers and tunnels I'm talking about." Lenneth mind already calculating the risks of this hunt. "Alright", she said, her voice firm. "But if there are treasures lying deep in this dungeon, it means we'll have to face plenty of monsters along the way." Lenneth said this to avoid him disturbing her true mission, sent to collect the Einherjar, the souls of worthy heroes. She is frustrated at the man's stubbornness. She had tried to warn him of the dangers they would face, but he was adamant that he could handle himself. "It's dangerous", she said her voice laced with irritation."These monsters are no joke. Are you sure you can handle yourselft?" The man smiled confidently, his eyes glinting with excitement. "Don't worry about me", he said, his voice dripping with bravado. "I know how to fight. And besides, I have you with me, right?" Lenneth grudgingly acquiesced to his insistence, knowing that he wouln't take no for an answer. Together, they continued their way further into the dungeon....
Lenneth snapped out of her recollections by the sound of a voice calling her name through the hallway. She realized that was Hrist, acompany by Silmeria. Lenneth turned away from the memories, pushing them aside for now as she made her way to them.
