Chapter 2

A moment later, Michael shoved the door open with an icy expression. "This is a hospital. Please behave yourselves, both of you!" Zack frowned and looked over, his expression darkening. My heart skipped a beat. I quickly grabbed Zack's hand and stepped between him and Michael, snapping at Michael sharply, "None of your business! Get out!" I knew Zack all too well—he was a total lunatic. If anyone crossed him, he would definitely retaliate viciously. Sure enough, Zack looked away. Michael, meanwhile, stared at me, his face thunderous. A few seconds later, he slammed the door and left. I breathed a sigh of relief, swallowing the knot of emotions in my throat, and held out my hand to Zack again. But Zack grabbed my wrist, stopping me from what I was about to do next. "Forget it. Your face is so pale from the pain; we can wait until you're feeling better." I stopped, a flutter of panic rising in my chest, desperate not to lose the ground I'd just won. "It's okay, I can—" Zack stood up and took a step back. "Be good. Even though you didn't finish, my promise still holds. I'll take you to meet my father in a couple of days to discuss our marriage." With that, he patted me on the shoulder and turned to leave. Only after his footsteps faded down the hallway did I relax my tensed body, and I realized my back was drenched in cold sweat. Warmth bloomed across my chest; my wound had torn open, and blood was seeping through the bandage. I pressed the call button right then. The nurse came in, and when she saw the bloodstain spreading across the gauze on my chest, she gasped and hurried to call the doctor. Michael walked in again. The atmosphere turned icy. He silently redressed my wound. Suddenly, he spoke coldly, "Bad blood really does run thick in your family, just like your brother and your father." Those words cut like the sharpest blade, stabbing precisely at the deepest, most painful place in my heart. But I didn't dare let it show. I used to think they had betrayed the police force too. It wasn't until my father's death and my brother became an undercover agent that I realized how horribly wrong I had been. They had been working undercover for years, and since they still hadn't caught the kingpin of the criminal syndicate, they were still branded as traitors by the rest of the world. I lowered my head to hide the tears welling in my eyes, forcing my lips into a hollow smirk. "Yeah. You're just seeing what kind of person I am now? Since you know I'm rotten, you should stay far away from me." Michael pressed his lips together tight. After a moment of silence, he dropped the scissors into the disinfectant tray with a loud clatter. "If you are so irresponsible with your own body, I'll have you discharged immediately. After all, we are not obligated to waste medical resources on whatever sordid lifestyle you've chosen." He turned and left without a word, his manner icy, and the ward fell silent once again. In the silence, every emotion and pain was amplified. The physical pain and the sharp ache in my heart made it impossible for me to sleep peacefully. I lay there with my eyes open, staying awake the whole night. I only drifted off into a light sleep when the sky began to lighten, but I hadn't been asleep long when the sharp pop of a confetti cannon in the corridor jolted me awake. My pulse hammered against my ribs. When I heard the sounds of celebration coming from outside, I couldn't help but get up and pull open the door. I saw several nurses surrounding Michael and another female doctor, spraying confetti over the two of them. "Dr. Jacobs, Dr. Sheffield, congratulations to you both!" "You two really are the perfect couple in our department. You studied together, passed the assessment together, and when you start your fellowships overseas, you'll be able to travel together!"
