Lena stared at Daniel.
“You know the name.”
Daniel remained silent.
“Then tell me.”
He placed the notebook back on the desk.
“Your father believed this person was connected to everything.”
“Everything?”
“The investigation. Claire's disappearance. His own disappearance.”
Lena felt a chill.
“Who is it?”
Daniel finally turned the notebook around and pointed to the nearly erased name.
Lena leaned closer.
She could make out only a few letters.
M… C… R…
Her eyes widened.
“Is that—”
A loud sound came from the hallway.
Both of them froze.
Daniel immediately switched off the desk lamp.
They listened.
Footsteps moved slowly across the floor outside.
Lena whispered, “Someone followed us.”
Daniel shook his head.
Then the footsteps stopped directly outside the office door.
The handle began to turn.
Lena stepped backward.
Daniel moved between her and the door.
The door opened.
But there was no stranger standing there.
It was Lena's mother.
She looked frightened.
“What are you doing here?” Lena asked.
Her mother looked at the notebook in Daniel's hand.
Then her face went pale.
“You found it.”
Lena frowned.
“Found what?”
Her mother slowly closed the door behind her.
“The truth your father spent three years trying to keep hidden.”
