Chapter 8: Beneath the Hidden Staircase The heavy stone door slammed shut behind Adrian and Isabella with a thunderous boom. The sound echoed through the narrow passageway, making Isabella jump. "We're trapped," she whispered. Adrian remained calm, holding the silver sword tightly in one hand while switching on a small flashlight with the other. "No," he replied. "The door only opens from the inside. It's a security measure." "A security measure?" Isabella frowned. "Your family built a secret tunnel beneath the mansion?" "My grandfather did." The narrow staircase spiraled deep beneath the earth. Cold, damp air filled the passage, carrying the scent of ancient stone and forgotten history. As they descended, strange carvings began to appear on the walls. They showed kings wearing silver crowns, queens holding glowing pendants, and warriors kneeling before a young princess. Isabella stopped. "I've seen these people before." Adrian looked at her. "In your visions?" She nodded. "The palace... the little girl... they're all here." Before Adrian could answer, the distant scream echoed again. This time it was louder. And much closer. "Help me..." The voice belonged to a woman. Isabella instinctively moved forward. "We have to help her." Adrian caught her wrist. "It could be a trap." "What if it isn't?" He hesitated. Then slowly released her hand. "Stay behind me." They continued deeper into the tunnel until the staircase opened into a vast underground chamber. Isabella gasped. The room was breathtaking. Towering stone pillars supported the ceiling. Ancient banners, faded with age, still hung proudly from the walls. At the center stood a magnificent marble throne covered in dust. Behind it was a giant mural of a queen wearing the crescent pendant. Her face looked hauntingly familiar. She looked exactly like Isabella. "This can't be..." Isabella whispered. Adrian stared silently at the mural. "My grandfather wasn't imagining it." Suddenly... Footsteps echoed across the chamber. Neither of them moved. A hooded figure emerged from the darkness. The stranger carried an old lantern. "I've been waiting for you," the old man said. Adrian immediately raised his sword. "Who are you?" The old man slowly lowered his hood. His white hair fell to his shoulders, and deep wrinkles lined his face. "My name is Elias." "I was once the royal guardian of this sanctuary." Isabella frowned. "That's impossible." He smiled gently. "I know it sounds impossible." "You should have died hundreds of years ago," Adrian said. "I should have." Silence filled the chamber. Elias turned toward Isabella. "But destiny has strange ways of preserving those with unfinished duties." He slowly knelt before her. "Welcome home... Your Highness." Isabella stepped back in shock. "No." "You've mistaken me for someone else." Elias shook his head. "The blood of Queen Elena flows through your veins." "I can feel it." Adrian looked between them. "So the prophecy..." "It is real," Elias answered. Before anyone could speak again, a loud explosion shook the chamber. Dust rained from the ceiling. Elias's expression changed instantly. "They've found us." "Who?" Adrian demanded. "The Order." The ancient guardian hurried toward the throne. He pressed one of the carved stones. A hidden compartment opened, revealing a small wooden chest. Inside lay an old leather journal wrapped in blue silk. Elias handed it to Isabella. "This belonged to Queen Elena." "It contains the truth about your family." Before Isabella could open it, another explosion echoed through the tunnels. Cracks spread across the stone walls. "They're breaking in!" Adrian shouted. Dark figures poured into the chamber. Each wore a black cloak marked with a silver phoenix. The scarred leader stepped forward. His cold eyes locked onto Isabella. "There you are." Adrian moved in front of her. "You'll have to go through me." The scarred man smiled. "I was hoping you'd say that." Without warning, the chamber erupted into chaos. Steel clashed against steel as Adrian met the first attacker. The sound echoed through the ancient sanctuary. Elias grabbed Isabella's arm. "Listen carefully." "There is a hidden passage behind the throne." "You must escape." "What about Adrian?" "He'll buy us time." "I'm not leaving him!" "If you stay..." "The royal bloodline ends tonight." Tears filled Isabella's eyes. She looked at Adrian, who was already surrounded by enemies. He caught her gaze across the room. For a brief moment, the battle seemed to disappear. He smiled. A calm, reassuring smile. "Go!" His voice thundered through the chamber. "I'll find you." Reluctantly, Isabella followed Elias behind the throne. The hidden passage slowly opened. As she stepped inside, she looked back one last time. Adrian stood alone against dozens of enemies. His silver sword flashed beneath the ancient lights. Then the stone door closed between them. The last thing Isabella heard was Adrian shouting her name.
