Chapter 11: The Calculated Breakout

685 Words
Eliza didn't waste a second on remorse or hesitation. As Marcus lay inert, she pulled off her light nightgown, revealing the pre-prepared escape uniform beneath: dark, durable cargo pants with multiple pockets and a long-sleeved thermal shirt. She yanked on the heavy hiking boots Marcus had bought—the boots from a trip that was supposed to be a romantic weekend getaway, but ended in Marcus drinking and insisting that she fulfilled his every desire—now repurposed as tools for her freedom. The weight of the laces and the sturdy leather felt like armor. The irony that something Marcus had bought for her was now being used to help her escape from him was not lost on her. She checked her pockets: the micro-LED flashlight, the small knife she had grabbed from the kitchen, and her hastily scribbled notes that had been hidden in her magazine stash. She glanced at her wrist, the paracord bracelet a solid, reassuring presence. She ran her fingers along the cord, feeling that it was a totem of sorts that gave her power when she needed it the most. The knowledge of Marcus’s narcissistic security code—his own birthday, a number she had been forced to celebrate annually—allowed her quick access to the restricted areas. It had been a guess, but of course she had guessed correctly. She slipped out of the bedroom, past the office, and down the narrow flight of stairs to the basement entrance. She used the code, heard the quiet mechanical clack of the high-security lock, and pushed the heavy door open, letting the narrow beam of her tiny flashlight cut into the dank, earthy darkness of the cellar. The coppery smell of blood hit her nose before her eyes had time to react to the horrific sight in front of her. Kael was slumped in the chair, his powerful frame weakened and strained against the bindings. His face was a canvas of deep, ugly bruising, and fresh blood stained his shirt and the concrete floor. He was barely conscious, but his eyes, when they slowly lifted to meet her beam, were still clear, focused, and utterly relieved. "Oh, Kael," she choked out, rushing toward him, her own pain momentarily forgotten. "I am so sorry. This is my fault. I put you here." "No," he managed, his voice a raspy whisper, but his gaze was firm. "My choice. You... are safe." She didn't argue. Time was a luxury they didn't have. She knelt, her gloved hands working furiously at the knots binding his wrists and ankles. The rope was tough, but Marcus hadn't anticipated a rescue mission. She quickly sliced through the most restricting bindings with her small, sharp knife, feeling the blood pulsing back into his swollen hands. "We are getting out of here," she declared, the words ringing with a fierce conviction she hadn't known she possessed. Kael nodded, a flicker of appreciation and respect passing through his battered eyes. He gingerly tried to stand. The sheer mass of his body—all muscle and sinew—was too much for his battered legs to support. Eliza braced herself. She slid her shoulder under his armpit and used all the strength born of survival adrenaline. She took his massive weight onto her tiny frame, staggering but holding firm. The moment was agonizingly tender and profoundly unequal—she, the one being rescued, now supporting her savior. "We move slow," Kael breathed, leaning heavily on her. "I know the perimeter. But we need... the blind spot." "I know the perimeter, too," she countered, pointing the flashlight toward the access door. "You showed me the first time. We just need to cross the electric fence." They moved, a slow, agonizing crawl up the basement stairs. She had gained a warrior, but he was currently crippled. They had the element of surprise, but that surprise would expire with Marcus's sleeping draught. Their only guarantee was the immediate outside. They were heading into the wilderness, together, the terrified bird and the wounded wolf, with the powerful monster waiting to wake up.
