Chapter 4: The Mysterious Ruins

1542 Words
“Is this some kind of joke?” Mei Ling’s voice was sharp, her eyes narrowing as she stared at the massive stone structure in front of them. “No one said anything about there being ruins on this island,” Jack muttered, stepping forward cautiously. His eyes scanned the crumbling walls, etched with strange symbols that looked far too deliberate to be the work of nature. The jungle had swallowed most of the structure, vines snaking up the sides and trees growing through cracks in the stone. Yet, something about the ruins felt… off. Victoria crossed her arms, her jaw tense. “Well, it’s clearly been here for a long time. Centuries, probably.” Elena let out a nervous laugh. “Great. So not only are we stranded, but now we’re in a creepy Indiana Jones movie.” “No one’s forcing you to stay,” Mei Ling snapped, her tone icy. Elena rolled her eyes but didn’t respond. Jack took a few steps closer to the ruins, his boots crunching against the overgrown path. “Stay close. I don’t want anyone wandering off.” “Do you think this has anything to do with the crash?” Sofia asked quietly, her voice trembling. Jack didn’t answer right away. His eyes were fixed on the carvings covering the stone wall. Lines, spirals, and shapes that looked almost like writing, though he couldn’t make sense of them. “It’s possible,” he said finally. “But we’re not going to figure it out just standing here.” Victoria stepped forward, her eyes flicking over the symbols. For a moment, her expression changed—just a flicker of something, too quick for anyone to notice. Or so she thought. “Something you recognize?” Mei Ling asked, her voice cutting through the thick silence. Victoria’s head snapped toward her, her face blank. “What? No. Of course not.” “You hesitated,” Mei Ling said, taking a step closer. “You’re imagining things,” Victoria shot back, her voice icy. Jack turned, holding up a hand. “Enough. Both of you.” “This is a waste of time,” Mei Ling muttered, turning away. Jack ignored her. He took a deep breath, his fingers brushing over one of the carvings. The stone was cool to the touch, despite the oppressive heat of the jungle. “This place isn’t natural,” he said quietly. “Whoever built it… they had a reason.” “Yeah,” Elena said, crossing her arms. “And I’m guessing it wasn’t to give tours to lost reality show contestants.” Jack ignored her. “Spread out. See if you can find anything useful—tools, supplies, anything that could help us figure out what this place is.” “Splitting up? That’s your big plan?” Elena asked, her tone dripping with sarcasm. “Just stay within shouting distance,” Jack said firmly. “And don’t touch anything unless you’re sure it’s safe.” “Safe?” Elena muttered under her breath. “Right. Because this whole situation just screams safe.” Sofia hesitated, her eyes darting between Jack and the ruins. “Do you really think there’s something here that can help us?” Jack met her gaze, his expression unreadable. “I don’t know. But we don’t have the luxury of ignoring anything that might give us an edge.” --- The group fanned out, each person tackling a different section of the ruins. Jack kept a cautious eye on the others as he worked, his every sense on high alert. Victoria lingered near a set of carvings that looked different from the rest. Her fingers traced the edge of the symbols, her movements deliberate. “Find something?” Jack’s voice startled her, and she quickly pulled her hand back. “No,” she said quickly. “Just… trying to make sense of it.” Jack frowned but didn’t press her. “Let me know if you do.” Victoria nodded, her expression carefully neutral. --- Sofia crouched near what looked like a collapsed archway, her hands brushing away dirt and leaves. She uncovered a small, rusted object—a knife, or at least what was left of one. “Jack,” she called out, holding up her find. He came over, taking the object from her. “Good work,” he said, turning it over in his hands. The blade was dull and corroded, but the handle was intricately carved, as if it had once belonged to someone important. “Do you think it belonged to whoever built this place?” Sofia asked, her voice barely above a whisper. “Maybe,” Jack said. “Or maybe someone else found this place before we did.” The thought didn’t sit well with him. --- Mei Ling stood at the edge of the ruins, her arms crossed as she watched the others. She wasn’t interested in ancient carvings or rusted tools. Her focus was on survival, and right now, this ruin wasn’t helping anyone. But something about Victoria’s behavior bothered her. The way she kept glancing over her shoulder, the way she lingered near certain carvings—it wasn’t normal. Mei Ling’s eyes narrowed. Victoria was hiding something, and she intended to find out what. --- “What the hell is this?” Elena’s voice broke the silence, drawing everyone’s attention. The group converged on the spot where she stood, her arms crossed as she stared at a large stone slab carved with symbols. Jack studied it, his brow furrowing. “Looks like some kind of map.” “Of what?” Sofia asked. Jack didn’t answer right away. The carvings were too abstract to make sense of, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that they were important. “This could be the key to understanding this place,” he said finally. “Or it could be a dead end,” Mei Ling said, her tone skeptical. “Do you always have to be so negative?” Elena snapped. “Do you always have to be so useless?” Mei Ling shot back. “That’s enough,” Jack said sharply, his voice cutting through the tension. Victoria stepped closer to the slab, her eyes scanning the symbols. She recognized some of them—she was certain of it. But she couldn’t let the others know. “Any ideas?” Jack asked her. Victoria shook her head. “No. It’s just… strange, that’s all.” Jack frowned but didn’t press her. --- The sun dipped lower in the sky, casting long shadows over the ruins. The jungle came alive with the sounds of insects and distant animal calls, a reminder that night was approaching. “We need to get moving,” Jack said, his tone firm. “We can’t stay here after dark.” “Why not?” Elena asked. “It’s not like we have anywhere safer to go.” “Because I don’t trust this place,” Jack said simply. “That makes two of us,” Mei Ling muttered. Victoria glanced at the ruins one last time, her expression unreadable. “Fine. Let’s go.” The group began to gather their things, but as they turned to leave, a sudden noise froze them in their tracks—a deep, guttural sound that seemed to come from within the ruins. “What the hell was that?” Sofia whispered, her eyes wide with fear. Jack held up a hand, signaling for silence. His eyes scanned the shadows, his grip tightening on the knife in his hand. “Stay together,” he said quietly. The sound came again, louder this time. It was followed by a low, rhythmic thumping, like footsteps. “Something’s in there,” Elena said, her voice shaking. “No kidding,” Mei Ling muttered, her hand already on the hilt of her knife. Jack took a step forward, his every muscle tensed. “Stay here,” he said. “Are you crazy?” Victoria hissed. Jack ignored her. He moved toward the sound, his steps slow and deliberate. The others watched, their breaths held. He reached the edge of the ruins, peering into the darkness. For a moment, there was nothing. And then he saw it. --- A shadow moved, just at the edge of his vision. Too large to be an animal, too deliberate to be random. Jack’s heart pounded as he stepped back, his knife raised. “Jack?” Sofia’s voice was barely a whisper. He didn’t answer. The shadow moved again, closer this time. “What is it?” Victoria asked, her voice low but urgent. Jack turned to the group, his expression grim. “We need to go. Now.” “But—” Elena started, but Jack cut her off. “Now.” The group didn’t argue. They turned and began to move quickly through the jungle, the ruins looming behind them like a silent sentinel. As they disappeared into the trees, the sound came again—louder, closer. And then a voice, low and guttural. Not one of theirs. “What the hell did it say?” Sofia whispered, her face pale. Jack didn’t answer. He didn’t know. But he intended to find out.
