Chapter 23

953 Words

Aurelia’s POV The silver wolf glides in a way that seems ungodly. It takes each step purposely, methodically, as if it knows exactly what it is doing and its reasons why. The air around it hums with energy, vibrating the hair on my body, making the wolf in me quiver. This is no ordinary being; it is cosmic. Mom scrambles back, her usual poise gone as she looks up at the beast above her. Now I see fear in her eyes for the first time. Genuine, raw fear seizes her face. “What are you?” she whispers, her voice quaking with panic. The wolf does not respond. Instead it tilts its head ever so slightly, appraising her like prey. Then, suddenly, it goes lunging again. Something compels me to act. Maybe it’s instinct or maybe pity, but I charge ahead, positioning myself between Mom and the wolf
