Aurelia's POV
The dial tone hummed in my ear. Each ring made the knot of worry in my stomach tighter.
I chewed my lip trying not to notice the huge house around me the sharp smell of Sierra’s anger and the strange way Evelyn felt so familiar.
Finally a rough voice answered.
“Hello?”
“Dad? It’s Aurelia.”
There was a long pause and the air changed. Then cold as ice he said.
“What do you want?”
His words hurt.
“I... I won’t be able to come home tonight.”
“And why not?” His anger came fast like it always did.
I swallowed.
“I’m... I’m at Julian’s house.” I pushed the words out getting ready for him to explode. “I’m at my mate’s house.”
